I have a question.. I noticed that everytime I went downhill I would hear a clicking noise coming from the rear wheels. Upon further inspection I noticed that the wheel weights were mounted on the far inside of the rim and were being rubbed off by the calipers. I can't get this problem fixed until this coming weekend. Could anything bad come from this?

im going to say no, you might knick up your caliper a bit, but thats it. wheel weights are made from lead (or maybe not anymore) but they are a really soft metal, they will mess up before your caliper does -

Thats what happened, the weights are lead and one side of the wieghts have already rubbed off.Comment

The worst that will happen is your tire/wheel will be out of balance. If you drive like that for 1000+ miles then maybe your tires will show it, but thats a big maybe.
I would take them back to the shop that balanced it and request that they be rebalanced with the weights on the outside of the wheel. That's how I balance mine, and they should do it for free since it obviously didn't work before.
It may not be as pretty, but at least it works right.Comment

how the heck do they hit the calipers? Those must be some massive stick on weights. Our stick on wheel weights barely stick up from the wheel and don't come near the caliper at all.Comment

I've seen techs who stack the stick on weights before...
Next time you get them balanced ask for "alloy 2" balancing. That uses a stick weight for the outer edge and a clamp on for the inside...Rebuilding the engine... Building a custom front end... T-top conversion... Custom rear hatch..

Did the sticky fail? Did they make this noise when you left the shop? Pull off a wheel and do a full inspection and post your findings to get the best advice.Comment

They appear to be stick on lead weights. They were placed along side of each other near the spokes on the inside of the rim. The disc brake caliper only has about 1/4 inch of clearance between it and the rim, so the caliper rubbed off part of the lead on the weights. I do not hear the clicking when I drive or brake during normal driving. I only hear the problem when I apply a lot of force to the brake pedal, such as traveling down a steep hill. The brakes are brand new and work much better than average, so I know that is not the problem.Comment

Factory 16x8 snowflakes off of a 2000-02 Camaro. The car originally had 16x8 chrome 5 stars, the same rims found on a '97-00 Camaro. They rotted out and thats why I replaced them. So the rim size stayed the same.Comment

Structural. I could not for the life of me figure out why my new tire was leaking air. I put the entire wheel in a tub of soapy water and after about fifteen minutes I found a pin hole on the inside of the rim. I send the rim to a shop to get a bead weld and the guy said that the rim cracked further. I sold the other 3 rims and junked the 1 rotted rim. They were all in bad condition to begin with.. chrome was flaking off and a lot of rust.Comment
