  • Please someone help! Car won't start after messing with coils

    I have a 2001 Camaro with a V6 3.8.

I started having a problem with the engine stumbling and losing power. So I changed the wires and the plugs. It got better but I still have a problem when I hit the gas, the engine shakes for a bit and then it takes off.. it loses power. So I thought its the coils. A mechanic I know tried to check which coil it is by taking off the wires off of the coils while the car is running. He took each one off and put it back on. At the last coil in the back, he took it off and by the time he put it back on, the car died out. I tried to start the car but I cannot. We took off the wires off of the coils and there is no sparks when I try to start the car. It's like there is no power coming to the coils.

What can it be? Is the computer supposed to be reset and how?

I tried taking off the wires to the battery and waiting and it still does the same thing.

If you are not getting spark, but the motor cranks when you try to start the car it's possibly the Ignition Control Module (ICM) which is directly under the coil packs. I doubt all of your coil packs are bad. Normally when a coil pack goes bad you start seeing misfires in 1 or 2 cylinders. Is the Service Engine Soon (SES) light on? If so have you scanned the codes? The codes it returns could show you the problem.

While it could be a computer issue it's more likely to be something else. The easiest way to reset the computer is to clear it with an obd2 scanner which a mechanic should have. Make sure the wires all go on the right way, firing order 1-6-5-4-3-2.

First of all, thanks for the answer.. anyways I am getting a P0300 code which is random cylinder misfire and when I accelerate the car stumbles and loses power, and the SES light blinks at this time. I took the ICM off of the car and that is probably it, there is water that was dripping on it from the cowl apparently directly on the coil packs and it slid down on where the coil packs are screwed onto the ICM. Could this have caused the problem?
