Hey! Can I have some advice? I need a new fuel pump. Everything points to it. We've diagnosed, etc, and it doesn't work. I have found a fuel pump for like $500 just for the parts.... Is this right? Can I pick your brains and get your suggestions or ideas? I can't believe it is that much. We are going to fix it ourselves, we have a lift to use and unfortunately it looks like we have to remove the fuel tank and part of the exhaust system. HELP! Thanks guys and gals!
Carolyn
you can get a racetronix ls1 fuel pump that will be an upgrade and way cheaper than that 500 stock replacement you found. You should be able to score a racetronix kit for under 200 bucks.
I am assuming of course that you have an 02 car from your screenname
You should go with a racetronix if you want the best stock fit. I went with a walbro 255 which is a quality pump and an upgrade, but requires more work to install, but it is cheaper than a racetronix kit. With the walbro you have to modify the pump assembly (bucket).
The easy way to swap the pump is by cutting an access hatch in the hump of the car:
ok, so help me out....is the LS1 a 350? I have a 6 cyl basic stock convertible. No frills (although I wish I could make it better, faster)
But right now, I am looking at just replacing the fuel pump. I like the idea of going through the floor, seems much easier, but I need to make sure that I'm looking at the right thing on the website.
The Racetronix LS1 I looked at on their website is for "plastic tanks only" I have a metal fuel tank.
I am thinking these questions may sound stupid, but I am super confused right now. I got a guy at a shop telling me that its gonna be a 6 hour job, and the replacement is $500 -- then he says, I should just replace the pump, $15 bucks -- but still gonna have to take the exhaust and tank down, take all the gas out (figures -- it was full). He mentioned something about cutting a hole in the trunk -- I'm thinking we are gonna have to take the seats out to get to it..I have no trunk (barely) it's a convertible. I emailed the sales dept at Racetronix too to see if they could help. I trust you guys.... so that's why I am here. Thanks
You should have a plastic tank if you have an 02. You cut in the hump behind the rear seats, towards the back of the hump near the trunk area. Not sure how it works out on the convertible. As for the pump get a racetronix or walbro 255, either pump will work fine. There is no point in buying a $500 inferior pump (prolly whole assembly for $500).
6 hours of labor is for dropping the tank. Cutting the hole should take... very little time with an angle grinder. My install didn't take long at all that way. You could really do it yourself quite easily like I did if you have an angle grinder or a friend with one.
Even if you do drop the axle and tank instead of cutting the hole, there is no point in using a stock pump.
The racetronix kit uses a walbro 255 but comes with a substitute for the bucket which makes it way easier to do since you don't have to epoxy anything back together. Cutting through the trunk area is very easy and there's a writeup with pics floating around here somewhere. You just want to be careful to not cut very deep.
Ah I didn't realize it was a 255 in the racetronix, thought they had their own pump. Yea I'm real happy with my 255 right now, and it's less noisy than the dying factory pump was :).
I think his prob now is that it's a convertible model so hes not sure how to cut. Is the hump inside the trunk of the convertible the same?
id say he'll probably have to remove the top completely to do it that way. hell i dont know you might be able to get it thru the trunk space but something tells me there wont be room.
post a pic of the trunk and car with possibly the top up and down and the rear, im sure there's a way.
