  • Anyone know what this noise is? Video

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=of8sYGAWPnI

I've got it on a few forums, so some may have already seen it.
It makes this noise constantly in reverse. In forward gears it makes the noise for a second or two over bumps, briefly when slowing down to a stop, and occasionally randomly while just driving, again for a few seconds at a time.
In the past, it would make this noise (not as bad though) every so often when I got on the gas in reverse once the car was warmed up. Otherwise no other time.
Today it started making the noise out of nowhere in forward gears as I was driving down the road and just got worse from there, as you can hear in the video. It came up pretty fast.

exhaust hitting right after the s bend on the crossmember. take a look under the passenger side right where the clamp is after the s bend and see.

I was leaning towards that at first, but why is it gear-specific? When I shift out of reverse into neutral or park, it kinda grinds away slowly.. so it doesn't sound exhaust related then.
Others have mentioned something gear-related.. a little more dire. But the car still shifts fine?

God, I'll try crawl my fat *** under it tomorrow and see what I can see. Where exactly is it? How much clearance is there supposed to be there?

look towards the back, there is a crossmember under the driveshaft, the exhaust loves to sag right there and vibrate on the tunnel brace.

when mine did that i took a hammer to it and smashed it down, it worked for a while. after i changed my clutch i was away and my father got under the car and put it back on, but he accidentally put it on backwards and it stopped vibrating, but i have since taken it off

when you put the car in gear the idle drops, the lower the idle the rougher the engine gets which causes the exhaust to rattle more... this is just a complete guess though, but a very common problem.

if it was gear related it would only make the noise while you are moving, not when sitting still.

Well the exhaust is attached to the transmission at the catalytic converter. If the transmission mount is worn out, it will move the exhaust around too, probably making it rattle against the tunnel brace.
