I didn't know where to put this, so relocate it if need be.

Okay, lets start out with the first things that happened. About 2 weeks ago, I noticed my radiator had a small leak in it. Nothing big, just a tiny crack. I told myself, I would watch it, and when it got bigger I would get a new radiator. Well, I watched it, and it got bigger and cracked more on me while driving. The car got HOT. It never went into the red, but none the less was way up on the guage. So, I got the car home, and patched it up with some water weld. It seemed to do the job. Put the radiator back in, filled it up, and watched for leaks. It was holding water. Well, I took it for a drive ( 40 miles or so) and it popped again. I finally broke down and bought a used radiator for the local junk yard. I put it in, and watched it for leaks. It was doing perfect. Then today, I was picking up parts for the shop I work at, I parked at a gas station to get some gatorade, and notice a massive amount of water gushing from under my car! #@$%!!!! Well, I pulled the cap off as quickly as I could as to stop it from building too much pressure and blowing something ( I walked away from being sprayed without a mark btw). So, I bought a new cap for it, filled it up, and its running really cool again. Basically what I need to know is, could it have been my cap this whole time? It was rather dirty. Or do I need to give into my worst fears and tear the motor down and replace the gaskets? No smoke or steam comes from the heads, and no water is in the oil and vice versa. I also took the thermostat out, because I thought it was sticking. Any clues? Any Ideas? Also, the water is rather foamy in the radiator, and orange...it is a used radiator, so I will eveuntually clean it really well.

On a side note, the car I went to go get the cap for my firebird in, as I was pulling back into BP, the tie rod broke off on the drivers side. 2 cars within 5 feet of each other. Murphy's law wins out once again.

check to make sure your fans are working... if you were parked and the car was running without the fans kicking on, that could've caused the coolant to overheat...
Rebuilding the engine... Building a custom front end... T-top conversion... Custom rear hatch..
    Custom interior...

      Re: Radiator Problems

Before you tear anything down, you have a lot going on here.

New radiator cap - that's good.
You need to install the proper thermostat. It is not good to run without one.
Fill the cooling system, and bleed out all of the air.
Check to make sure your fans are working.
      Check for leaks.
Check to make sure that coolant and oil levels are good after refill and bleeding complete.. No oil in water, no water in oil.

Start with that and post your results.

Oh - BTW, NEVER, NEVER, NEVER open a hot radiator cap. Your skin is worth much more then any engine...

        Re: Radiator Problems

As far as I can tell, at the moment, my system is bled. I will check the fans in the morning on the way to work. I know I made a dumb choice choosing to open that cap, but looking back on things, my car broke down for a reason. My little brother was supposed to drive the car that the tie rod end broke on, and if he would have, he surely would have been hurt. BUT A twist to my tail. The times when this car has acted up the most, is after the ignition is turned off and the motor stops. I don't know if that helps clear anything up. I'll try to get a new thermo tomorrow.

Sounds like a bad radiator cap. You might have solved the problem already.

Install the new t-stat for sure though.

            Re: Radiator Problems

Well, the fans are working. I haven't lost any fluids. The car seems to be doing fine today. Drove it to and from work without any problems at all. I sure hope it was just that cap. I guess if I have no further problems, I will know for sure.

Update. Its been 1 week since I got a new cap. I put a thermostat in the next day ( a 195 degree one). The car is running great. Ive had no overheating problems and it runs like it should. Minus the miss cause it needs a tune up. Lol
