  • What keeps track of mileage?

As in, would swapping a PCM change mileage?

    Hoping the answer is no.

    Thanks.

I've heard that on our Trailblazer the PCM records mileage, but it does it seperately from the odometer. If you disable the odometer, the PCM continues to record mileage. I'm not sure if our cars are the same way. The Trailblazer is a new design and more stuff is controlled by computer, so it might be different.

So how can you reset the PCM and it still retain mileage information?

Just sort of wondering this. But if you somehow screwed up the gauge cluster part, could you simply plug another in (of course the mileage would be wrong and you'd have to take it to a mechanic to be fixed) but besides that would it run...or does the gauge cluster have to be reprogrammed for the car?

I've always wondered that for those who are doing gauge overlay swaps, if they could just put it on a new one and get it programmed to make sure they like it.

It would run but yes the mileage would be off.

This is a sneaky way of swapping clusters for a few years to *keep the miles off the car*

              Its illegal too.

And i'm not sure if this is advanced tech or not.. so I'm just going to move it to general.

That's the way I thought it was, but how can you check the mileage that the PCM recorded?

I think autotap and other tools of that nature have a paramater for miles..

I plan on scanning all the cars i buy in the future..

Believe it or not, here in PA it is a Felony-2 (F2) to roll back the miles on an odometer, but it's ony a Misdemeanor-2 (M2) to be a standard first time DUI (no accident, not fleeing, etc.)
Tell me the laws aren't screwed up!
You can be put away longer for rolling the miles back on a car than you can for driving under the influence.

Yeah, its the dash and PCM. I found that out when I was playing with autotap, noticed the mileage was off a couple hundred from the dash.. no biggie.

One thing I did notice though it that if you have the digital odometer and the acc. fuse blows, (youll know because your guages wont work) it stops counting.

I blew the fuse wiring me stereo up, didnt have an extra. I drove to radioshack with no guages, bought a new one, stuck it in, and the mileage hadn't changed since I left my house (approx 10 miles).
