Cleaning Internal Engine

Well at the moment I have the intake, manifold, and valve covers off my car while I am waiting for a lower intake manifold gasket. Of course their is some built up old oil sitting around and I was wondering what the best way off cleaning all of that crap out would be. I figured since I have nothing else that I can do with the car at the moment I can at least clean it up. If anyone has some good suggestions please let me know.

Just use seafoam and wipe it all out? I wish it was just as easy as taking a hose and spraying the hell out of it. Oh well I guess I can get in their with some seafoam.

The other two posters didn't read your full post.

His parts are OFF of the engine. Seafoam is stuff that is introduced to the engine via a vacuum line (usually the brake booster line). If your engine can't run, don't use Seafoam [img]smile.gif[/img]

If parts are off the the engine, the I'd say soap, water, and throttle body cleaner (NOT carb cleaner) will clean your stuff up nicely.

engine degreaser works wonders for me... just make sure everything is nice and dry before you go sticking it back on...

DON'T DO ANY OF THIS. Having oil in the valley where your balance shaft is, is not only normal but needed! Don't put anything but oil there, as it will be hard to get it all out before you are ready to start, and then these liquids can thin your oil out and hurt your motor.

If there's dirt or debris, use some form of compressed air to blow the stuff out. Do this into your intake ports on the heads as well, to be sure debris isn't going to be intriduced to the process when you crank the motor.

AGAIN...It is good for oil to be up there, it protects the motor (balance shaft, lifters, pushrods, springs, and rockers to be exact).

I knew that it would be good to have oil in there. I just wanted to clean it out some because the oil is kind of black and looks like it really never gets cleaned out too well with new oil. I planned on cleaning up the interior and then adding some fresh oil in before closing it up.

Here is what I did when I had my intake and valve covers off...

I soaked up any puddles of oil in the lifter valley and in the heads with a CLEAN rag. I then ran a pen magnet through the area to search for metal dust or flakes.

You need to thouroghly blow out the entire area with compressed air afterwards. You surely let some gasket material fall into the valley, intake ports, etc (as wea ll do), when you were removing the old gaskets. That old gasket material could clog an oil galley and spell disaster for the mighty Nathanmobile.
