  • 3.4L Thermostat

This story has a beginning, a middle, and an end. I just thought i'd share.

My 93 Firebird always runs nice and cool, about 170 to 180 degrees (160 t-stat). This morning it was creeping up to about 200 degrees while driving on the highway. Not normal for this car.

Drove it home and let it cool down. I had a brand new spare 180 degree fail safe t-stat in my tool box, so 1 hour later the job was done.

Took it for a test drive and it is planted at 180 degrees.

Gotta love this car. It always warns me before it is going to break down.

      Re: 3.4L Thermostat

I have had several cars in the past that were well known for that.

This car has been great so far, and I have had it for the past 4 years already.

            Re: 3.4L Thermostat

I have a question for you guys. A few months ago we took our '95 Camaro V6 to mechanic and he changed radiator hoses, thermostat and put in new coolant. Some time after I noticed a smell of coolant and then noticed there was some under car. I took to mechanic and he couldn't find any leak. Some time after that I noticed it was sporadically overheating (per gauge). I took it back today and he checked it out and did pressure test, checked everything (so he said) and told me there was some fluid missing but couldn't find any issues. He said the temperature stays low while driving and then it goes up to 3/4 on gauge (not sure of temp equivalent) and basically said to live with it. It doesn't seem right to me that it should fluctuate so much when everything is "OK" per his tests. Is it possible he put in bad thermostat? He assured me it was fine since radiator hoses were hot, etc. Yeah I know, I should get another mechanic but since he worked on it originally I wanted to go back for follow up. I asked what temp thermostat and he said 190, as per specs, but not sure which brand, etc. Not ever sure if it is one of these fail safe kinds. Is it worth to push for new thermostat or does anyone else live with such temp fluctuations in their coolant temps? My wife drive car and she is worried it will overheat and she will get stranded. I would appreciate any advice. Thanks!
