• Misfire problems for the second time need help!

    Hey guys-

2 months ago I had the misfire issue and my mechanic replaced the #6 spark plug wire and plug and it resolved it for 2 months (about 1,000 miles)

Yesterday it happened again, I started it up and within 10 seconds the car switched modes and I knew the problem was back, I barely made it to my mechanics and called for a ride home, hopefuly he gets to it tomorrow, but I'm not excited about him changing another wire/plug and I have this problem again

At Cz28 a guy was talking about shielding and my mechanic told me he re installed the factory shielding on the wire and looped it out of the way, what more can we do?

I only have 38K but I'm not going to deal with this every 2 months, anyone have a more preminant solution?

I called Ayers Chevy (for those in NJ) and the just asked them if they had a re-call on this and the guy was insistant that I have a major engine problem and I need to get the car on their tester

    Any help?

It could be another different plug/wire, you only had the #6 replaced? Do a full plug and wire change and get your ignition coils tested. In my opinion it is way too soon to say you have a major engine problem, the guy is trying to take you for a ride. Take it to a parts store and have the codes scanned (for free) and see where the misfire is coming from first.

replace wires with aftermarket ones and u wont have a heat issue with them, dont just replace 1 wire at a time do them all with plugs. like bethann said have your coils checked both primary and secondary resistance.

I replaced my wires to resolve a misfire issue just yesterday. I used a set of OEM AC-Delco wires. When I pulled out the old ones, one was damaged slightly, but it didn't resolve the problem.

I tested the "secondary" values on the coil with a cheap Walmart multimeter [check your Hanes manual for procedure]. All tested within spec. I didn't check the primaries, because I didn't want to pull the coils off at the time.

I made my car misfire on purpose enough to set the SES light on the dash and took it to a local transmission shop. After taking it for a ride with the computer hooked up the mechanic was able to see that something was wrong with the #3 cylinder. He pulled the boot off the #3 coil while the motor was running, and sure enough, the coil was dead on one side.

I changed the coil out myself [$21, advance auto oem-style]. It was really easy. BTW, when I took the coil off and checked the primary values, there was a problem. Hope this helps.

I've had bad plugs and wires(#4 wire melted and was shorting out) and it hasn't gone to reduced power mode on me. Just misfired. I'd have to guess it's a bad coil pack. Had one last month read fine on the ohm meter when cold but go out of spec when it was hot. I keep a spare for testing now.
