I lose about a quart of oil every 3000 miles and was wondering if this is a common issue. I use 10w30 oil.
I lose about a quart both summer and winters so the climate isn't an issue. Anyone else have the same issue? What measures can I take so my car doesn't burn up oil?
lucas oil treatmeant and if you use full sythetic. stop lol. but how many miles do you have? i have a friend that burns about the same but its cause his car was beat to death by the previous owners.
Actually one quart every 3000 miles probably would not be considered "not acceptable". At that rate you would never have to add oil because you should be changing it every 3000 miles anyway. My last car had almost 300K on it and was using about a quart every 3000 miles. It still ran and sounded like a new engine.
I have about 170k on the engine. I don't have any leaks at all and use conventional oil. I'm debating if I should send in my oil for analysis to find out if the oil is breaking down cause of heat or if it's something internal in my engine (and it's nice to know what the heck is in my dirty oil).
What's in the Lucas oil treatment? Does it just add more additives in the oil? I'd rather fix the issue itself rather than masking up the burning oil.
Still curious to know why I burn so much oil. I don't see any smoke from my exhaust and no oil leaks from my car.
I run RP 20W50 and don't burn any oil or loose any. If you had a leak somewhere and was dripping it then I could see loosing some, or worn valve guides leaking it into the combustion chambers alittle at a time if your not leaking it on the ground than its leaking internally somewhere. On mine I just have a small tranny leak at the main seal that leaks about 5-10 drips a trip since I don't have to top it off once a year.

lucas is just a higher weight oil basicly all i know is that i works and very well..... my mom uses it in her xterra now and it runs so much better less tick on start up and just cleaner sounding
You don't see smoke because the cat burns it up. You have to be burning a lot more than a quart every 1500 miles to get the blue smoke. You probably have to be down to the the quart per week range to be seeing smoke.
mine tends to burn about a quart and a half every 3000 miles.... very rarely i'll see a puff of smoke on startup but i've never seen it just smoke at idle or even leak oil onto the driveway

i have only seen smoke come from the car 3 times since i have owned it, one on first start up, and twice when i was at a friends backing into a spot, i was letting the clutch out while the car was still moving forward, putting a load against it.
since my rings are probably worn from my driving habits, they did not seal correctly under that load and i see smoke.
i put maybe 40 miles a week on the car as of now.. but i still only burn about a quart every 1500. if i let it go to 2000 miles the dipstick will be dry

yeah, this is what mine is like, iv only ever seen blue smoke from startup once, i can let my car idle for ever and i wont see any smoke coming from the exhaust. i thought i was loosing so much oil from my oil leak, but i guess the oil leak wasnt the problem because im still losing the same amount of oil
