  • SES/MAF questions

I did a search and found a few related items, but nothing that was specific enough, so I will ask here.

I have my SES light lit, I went to autozone, had the code read, and voila! it is a P0102, MAF low flow input signal. I spoke to a mechanic at my local GM dealer and he stated that the MAF's very rarely go out and usually it was a clogged Cat that caused the issue. So, my questions are as follows.

    Has anyone else heard this?
Has anyone been unable to clear that darn P0102 code?
How hard is it to change out that MAF on the TB?

    I appreciate all your assistance.

You might just need to clean the MAF, there are different techniques and I don't know what is best, I cleaned mine with some windex and a q-tip but you have to be REALLY careful not to break the little wire or get any fuzz on it. I bet people have other ideas too. As far as being related to cat, . Do you have a K&N filter? Lots of people have had problems with oil from the filter getting on the MAF, hence needing to clean it. Hope this helps.

Couple things to check: If you have access to a scanner, check to see if the MAF is getting any readings at all. If not, check the fuses at the block under the hood to see if any are blown and keeping it from getting power.

If it is reading, clean it. You can buy specialty throttle body cleaner at parts stores, or even carb cleaner will work. Spray it lightly on the wires, and BE SURE TO LET IT DRY very well. You can also use Q-tip to VERY VERY lightly wipe the wires. This is a delicate process, and should not be done in a hurry or by anyone with a heavy hand. THEY WILL BREAK OR GET DAMAGED IF YOU PUT PRESSURE ON THEM.

These things clear up about 90% of this code's occurances. If it doesn't, it is likely time to replace your MAF sensor. Find a junk yard sensor if you like to save money, it'll take about 5 minutes.
