  • Are all stock 3.42 gears LSD?

Ok, this has been bugging me. Curious.
2001 Firebird. second owner. not modified at all until I got it. The door codes do not list Y87. I called the dealer of origin and asked for a copy of the invoice. they were cool and sent me a copy of it. the invoice lists 3.42 gear and other stuff...but does not mention LSD. The car leaves two (alternating) skid marks on burn out.
So, is it taken for granted that all factory 3.42 gears are LSD?

My understanding is that all 3800's were fitted with 3.08 gears (without LSD) unless Y87 was fitted, in which case 3.42 gears and LSD were fitted.

However, I'm not sure if GM changed this in later years (inc 2001). I have a 2001 product brochure at home (picked it up when I was in the US) - I will check this evening.

not all 3.42 cars came with LSD.

this has been talked about in the drivetrain section before.

No, 3800's came stock with 3.08's (automatic), 3.23's (manual), and if you have the Y87 package, or the GU6 code, 3.42's

i read (gm literature) that the 3.42 was only available for automatics. manual were 3.23 with the y87.

I wonder if they ran out of parts...wanting to use up stock on hand...and just gave some cars the LSD along with the 3.42?

Either way, I was just curios. I got the door codes the third day I owned it. it did not seem to jive so that is why I called dealer for copy of invoice.

I can assure you that is not the case.

                    Non Y87:
                    Manual: 3.23, no LSD
                    Auto: 3.08, no LSD

                    Y87:
                    Manual: 3.23, LSD
                    Auto: 3.42, LSD
