    Hey again all
I was just thumbing through my Haynes manual about how to go about removing the oil pan. It says that you have to disconnect the mounting bolts on the right shock absorber, jack up the engine, raise the engine...etc. Is there an easier way without raising the damn engine??? I mean really? Do I really need a engine hoist?
Any advice or other ways to go about removing the oil pan would be a HUGE help!

    Thanks all

gotta lift the engine somehow to get the pan on/off. Sucks but that's the way GM designed it

Not if you have a TUb. K it comes off easy, just jack up the car and take the bolts out and the oil pan slips right out. LOL

Agh this sucks! I had a 94 with the 3.4 in it and I had to change the oil pan in that thing as well. But with the 3.4 I don't remember ever having to raise the entire engine or disconnect the shock and all this other crap..... Anyone want to change it for me??? LOL I will gladly pay! LOLOL ahhh this blows

sure, 75 an hour is the labor rate at the shop, but we can do it. :)

You can do it without jacking up the engine, but you have to remove the transmission. Either way is a pain.

it took me like 3 hours total to change the oil pan gasket my first time, its not too hard to do.

all i did was unbolt the engine mounts, and jack the engine up a tiny bit and slid it right out after i took the pickup off

also true! that is why i replaced my oil pan gasket AGAIN when i had my tranny off last ahhahahah.

the biggest b!tch is getting the oil pick up on and off.

yea I changed out my oil pan in my old 94 firebird. But i never took anything off or had to jack up the engine and I was able to get it off. But then again, tht was a 3.4 my 02 firebird that I have now is a 3.8 so I'm not sure how hard it will be this time around.

I'm wondering why there are problems in the first place with rusting oil pans. I've never heard of cars with their oil pans rusting. My last car was 15 years old and 293K on it, and the oil pan rusting was never an issue. I have a 20 year old Olds and the pan is fine, save for a little surface rust. Is there something insidious going on with F bodies?

nope, not fbody specific. We see other cars with oil pans rusting out here at the shop too. Just depends on what kind of pan, location of pan and roads the car is driven on.

Ok well that's good. I was starting to wonder if this was yet another area that GM cut corners on.
