  • My Heat Smells...should I be worried?

    Hey Everyone,

when i first start my car in the morning, if the heat is on...it SLIGHTLY smells like antifreeze. after the car warms up the smell goes away and then it just blows normal hot air as always. this intial smell worries me though...any thoughts on what it could possibly be? a leak?

Dying heater core. My oldsmobile always smelled like pancakes when I turned on the vents for a while, and I couldn't figure out why. Then on a Taco-Bell run in the dead of winter my heater core split clear in half from the stress, filling the cabin with steam and water. It was at that point that I realized the maple smell was antifreeze. Scared the crap out of me, but now I know that sweet smell=bad news. It does take a while before the core croaks entirely, as I'd been smelling it ever since I bought the car, but it'll give eventually.

I just did my heater core and it was not that hard at all. R&R took me 30 minutes tops.

Preventative maintenance for the upcoming Northeast winters here.
