  • Fuel Sender/Gauge Questions

Well it seems my fuel gauge is busted. Registers full or near full, drops, goes back up, in general it is now inaccurate. So I have some questions:

Is it possible to test the dash gauge to know if its the gauge or the sender? How would you know which is the problem?

Is the sender seperate from the pump in the tank - or do you have to buy both together?

Is this common or rare for "f" body models? Geez...mine is only 3 years old!!!!!!!

I have a feeling this is going to be an expensive job. Are there any tech types on the board here who know how many labor hours this would be to drop the tank?

u can actually cut a trap door in your hatch to get to the tank without droppin it. the sender is the whole assembly minus the fuel pump. www.rockauto.com has the sender but they aint cheap bout 300. it has been a problem with many gm cars past and present. good luck.

If you can make a trap door do it. Mine went when the car was just about 3, right before the warranty ended, so it was free. If you drop the tank, you have to drop the rear axle, and it's a big job. A shop will charge you a bunch, I was told at GM $800 inlcuding the part. I have heard of a few other f-bodies having this issue, and it's always been the sending unit in the tank.
