  • Does it really matter?

    Hey everyone,

I have a 2002 3.8 my question is does it really matter if you take the MAF screen out or not? reason I ask is I'm getting codes saying my car is running too lean now.

    Thanks

How many threads are you going to start to ask the same question? YES IT MATTERS, Some get away with taking it out most don't. The AFR even if re tuned with it out the screen is all over the place. To set the lean exhaust codes, your PCM is adding more than 15% fuel to make 14.7.

Sorry that I'm starting too many threads asking the same thing. My bad that I'm getting mixed answers and trying to narrow them down. Didn't think it mattered but I guess it does. My bad. Also thank you saying that it mattered but you don't have to be so rude about it.

Mine ran like crap , so I put it back in, my TB has been polished out really well so it flows well enough.

          Re: Does it really matter?

          ss,
Thanks for the reply. Yea I was getting mixed responses not only on this site but also LS1 so I just wanted to see if it really made that much of a difference or not. But as bigbrian442 has stated "YES IT MATTERS". My question now would be where can I get a new one from?? The junk yards around here don't have any f body's. Also when you took you's out did you ever get "lean" codes? That's another thing that is a bit strange to me. I took mine out drove it for over a month with absolutely no codes or anything. I had to replace my oil pan but didn't have the time to do it myself so I took it to the shop. They got the new one in but had to drop the exhaust from both manifolds to remove the old one. Now a day after I got the work done all of the sudden I get codes??? I don't understand it. That's another reason why I was starting so many threads on the topic, because I was getting so many mixed responses. But the more and more that I read and the info that I'm getting all point to the MAF screen. But because it got damaged I'm trying to locate a new one.

            Re: Does it really matter?

Mine just idled like crap, theres not much restriction since we already have 65mm TB's which is more than enough for low 11's. The point of the screen is to direct air flow to the maf so it has a more precise reading so it would affect if it was running lean or not, if all the air goes by the maf and not going through a screen directed to make it go through the maf, then yes its going to run lean. GM didn't just put them there for nothing.

hmmm weird. Then I wonder why I'm getting codes now. Like I said I ran it with no screen for a month with no problem..... this is really strange

              Thanks again ss

                    Re: Does it really matter?

Just clean the MAF, do you run K&N filter or have free ram air mod? Just get some MAF cleaner, pop out the MAF and blast the hell out of it.

                      Re: Does it really matter?

Yea I have a SLP cold air system and a K&N filter. Yea I will take the sensor out and see what happens. Hopefully that does the trick! Thanks for the replays all

                          Re: Does it really matter?

Supposedly over-oiled K&N filters can cause the MAF to get dirty, you may want to watch for that.
