i have so much sludge from the previous owner that used dexacool in it, and i would rather just replace the bottle than try to clean it out. how hard will it be?

i wouldnt replace it though, just get some soap and water and clean it out real good, its not that hard, and probably not filled with as much goop as you think.. usually the goop stays at the top and comes out pretty easily

Only change it if the battery hold down rail is broke.
Otherwise do as the other posters said and flush it out.

If you want to clean it out just flush it with some gas , once out of the car. I don't agree. There is nothing wrong with Dex - if you treat it as a performance coolant.
Use ONLY the 50/50 premix - DO NOT add tap water as this is a major cause of the sludge issue. Dex has a better heat transfer coefficient, so if you use the green stuff your engine WILL have a harder time cooling.

i use prestone extended life 50/50 mix, it is good for use with dexcool and the green stuff.
edit* but you are correct, there is nothing wrong with dexcool as long as you use distilled water with it and not water out of the tap, thats how the sludge forms in the first place.

I never buy the 50/50 mix. Why pay that much for 1/2 distilled water? You can get a gallon of distilled water at walmart for like $.90. So I just get the concentrate. Ive been running the green stuff for a few years now, never had any issues. Also never had any issues w/ Dexcool, just saw too many horror pictures. lol

My Dad saw so many problems with Dex working for GM for 40 years , he always suggets after warranty is up to flush the crap out, I have seen them do some back flushes replacing dex on some cars under warranty and it doesn't look pretty. I'll stick with the green coolant , never had any problems, actually I run distilled water now with some RP ICE and alittle green coolant.
