  • VATS like issues, but engine cranks...

    Here's where I'm at: 97 camaro 3.8 K
Starter is working, cranks engine fine.

Fuel pump relay is not receiving a signal from the PCM. The relay and pump have already been tested and work properly.

Ignition is not functioning, with fuel pump enabled (shorted relay contacts) I get gas smell from the exhaust (expected) when cranking.

The security light comes on for a second, but goes back out. I have a resistor bypass in place. This would seem to rule out the BCM unless the 50hz enable signal is not present. I'm not sure if the signal is required for the starter to engage, but I believe it is. Since the starter is working...

I'm troubleshooting the ignition next, see if I have any spark etc.

Does anyone have any experience with this specific kind of malfunction?

Bad PCM/ECU is my first guess, anything I missed/should check before replacing it? I have the full service manual and wiring diagrams for reference if needed.

I have. My firebird had those issues, I had no spark, no power going to the pump, Security light flashing on and off at random times. I remember driving it once and the throttle going wide open on me, had to kill it after I went over 100 mph and couldn't stop it. Eventually did my troubleshooting, and it came down to a fried PCM. Luckily I had a '97 PCM lying around, put it in, and it fired up and ran smooth since.

These problems sound like a bad PCM....

How does a PCM become bad? Solid state should become just that, solid state.

      Just curious, explain.

        cracked solder joints?

        or like busted capacitors?

        stuff like that.

its simple.. anything that others have mentioned can make one go bad, and even a battery disconnected while the engine is running can fry one.

the pcms are pretty amazing imo, they go through years of winters, heat waves, road salt, pounding potholes, etc.

yea PCMs seldom go bad but yours sounds like its tired of being the brains of the operation
