  • Ah ha! The source of the oil leak has been discovered...

... The rear main seal has a nasty leak and the oil pan gasket is also in need of replacement. From what I understand, the transmission has to lowered in order to replace the rear main seal. I was quoted between $600-700 to replace both.

    Opinions?

I'm still driving the car 40 miles per day back and forth to work.

depends how much oils is leaking, my buddy has a 1995 with the same issue, he did the math on how much oil he has to keep adding and figured out how long it is worth his while to just keep adding oil and post pone fixing the car.

Well, the last oil change which I performed on Saturday, 10-9-10 (2,200 miles ago), I lost about 1 qt. of oil in a 3 month, 3,000 miles period. I average around 1,000 miles per month. There was some oil under the car and it burns off of the crossmember and shoots up into my vents, litterally making my stomach turn sour.

When the car was on the lift Monday, there was a considerable amount of oil underneath the car and it took about 1 1/4 quarts to hit the full mark. The math tells me that the problem got worse, but who's to say it has.

yeah that's definitely something you'd want to get fixed.

Have you considered doing it yourself? The issues with fixes like these is the cost of labour.

I had considered a DIY project until he said the transmission had to be disconnected and dropped. I don't have the skill, time or patience for a project like that.

I assume you'd rather not drop that kind of money into repairs. Consider just putting up with it until you have the time to do it yourself?

To be honest, I don't want to do it myself. I enjoy changing my oil, brake jobs, suspension modifications, top half rebuilds, hanging exhaust systems... pretty much anything that doesn't involve the engine block, transmission, rear end and even power window motors (which I know how to do, I just become very angry.)

If you can do a top half engine rebuild, you can replace your rear main. Trans removal is super easy, even with it still in the car.
