  • Cutting out, need help!

ok, this is my very first post on here so please, be easy on me if this is the wrong section...

The problem i am currently having is the car is cutting out/missing it would seem although i have replaced or worked on all i can think of to correct the problem. whether i am driving from a cold start or let it warm up, when i press on the pedal, getting on it or taking it easy, it cuts out bad. very jerky. sometimes its perfectly fine, other times its a feeling like the first time someone is driving a manual transmission. usually happens the worst when giving it a bit of gas going up an onramp or just accelerating faster than normal but will do it even if im takin it very easy on the throttle. it will even die at times sitting still at a red light or warming up in my driveway so its not just under a loaded condition when the problem arises.

what i have currently done/replaced are as follows...

    *plugs
    *wires
    *all 3 coil packs
*taken the throttle body completely off and cleaned it like brand new
*used the correct sensor cleaner to gently clean the MAF sensor
*sprayed deep creep through the intake with car running while keeping steady throttle to clean the internals of the intake, injectors and hopefully as far as the O2 sensors
    *PCV valve
    *coolant temperature sensor
    *fuel filter
*cleaned and re-oiled K&N air filter
*checked fuel pressure 3 different times and it got 33PSI each time

I do have a code that i have had for about a year and a half that says catalyst efficiency below threshhold bank 1, but this current problem has only been happening for about a month now. took the car to a shop and had them do a diagnostic on it and it came back fine, apart from that same code, and the guy said the cat pinged high or whatever and that it might be the culprit which is what i was narrowing it down to as well before i took it there. but after he drove it, he said that no way the problem i was having was related to the cat, rather it was an electrical error somewhere due to the way the car was misbehaving. its not a bog down feeling like a clogged cat, rather like the car was shutting itself off and turning itself back on rapidly causing the "cutting out" feeling is how he described it.. anyways, i hope this novel i have written doesnt make people run from having to read so much.. sorry :) just wanted to be as thorough as possible. i hope for any help i can get. Thanks in advance!

    Have you checked the ICM?

Welcome btw. Those are humongous wheels. At least you wrapped em with something good. Post some pics of that custom intake too.

          Re: Cutting out, need help!

I will try to add some pictures of the CAI i replicated and some more of my car when i figure out how to do it.. CAI was done with sheet metal, rivits and some good ole duct tape! removed the baffle or whatever it is also. got the idea online from someone who did the same thing. it actually works too. dont really know if it made an improvement in performance but i can definitely hear the air sucking in now. purty neat

Auto trans? try a tranny flush/fill usually costs about $70... I'm not sure about our transmissions, but if your torque converter lock-up solenoid is stuck on it can cause the jerky feeling like "someone driving a manual for the first time"

                Re: Cutting out, need help!

thank you all for the responses. yes its an auto tranny. just over the summer i had to change the shift solenoids (sp?) and the fluid looked perfect, like brand new and nothing but a few specs on the magnet.. even so, wouldnt that only affect it while driving? this has the same cutting out feeling when in park...

also to note, I'm sitting in it right now and just realized that when it nearly dies but recovers instead of dying, the battery guage drops way down then comes back up.. don't know if that matters but maybe worth mentioning..

and i will check the ICM as well. would that not throw a code if it were bad?
