they chopped up a corvette to see how much weight reductions woulf help for handeling. they eventually made the car so light that they really messed up the set up of the car but before they had those problems they get to a point where they took off about 190 pounds and took off 1.8 seconds of there time thats almost .1 seconds for every 10 pounds. pretty interesting.

Interesting... I know weigh matters. I worked with a 2010 rac3e team briefly, they weight reduced the car insanely (lots of carbon fiber) but obviously had to reach a minimum weight, so they turned around and added weight, but they added it low and centralized and helped keep the car flat and steady, by strategically locating the weight.

I had seen that a while ago and was impressed by it. Since then my car has gone on a slight diet and lost around 100lbs. If I ever get a change to take it to the track there are a few more things I can take off last minute. :D

Yea shedding weight works wonders. The reason the setup went to **** when they took too much weight off is because they did not produce enough down force. If the car is too light, you need a lot more down force via spoilers to keep the car planted and you have to drive fast for the aerodynamics to take effect.

This is why F1 cars don't work if you drive too slow and why it takes serious skill to drive them. You can't learn to drive F1 by taking it slow, you basically have to drive fast right off the bat. Otherwise the wings don't provide down force, the tires lose heat and the brakes lose heat.
