Hey just like in the past 2 weeks my car has started putting out white smoke, more then usual and today its looking kind of blue. What do you think is going on? my car just broke 190000 could it just be the motor is finally going out ??

    Let me know thanks

    Re: Smoke

white smoke equals coolant. Blue smoke equals oil.

has it been cold where you live? I dont know too much about NM, but being from colder climates the cars will pump out a lot of white smoke from the water by-product of combustion.

but if i were to guess i would say it is probably the intake/head gaskets.

yeah its been really cold here not the norm for nm. and just for info why would the gaskets leaking be doing it ? The top end of my motor i bad tho

LIM gasket probably, or that coolant elbow, either way, time to replace some gaskets more then likely.

Probably stupid question but LIM?? and coolant elbow? lol and yeah theirs like alot of dark spots (like its leaking) around the intake manifold and the valve covers.

            Re: Smoke

compression test...that will tell you if a headgaskets gone...or pop the rad cap and start the car...watch to see if you are bubbling your coolant in the rad...if yes, and consistently...you have a bad head gasket...

lim is lower intake manifold gasket, and the coolant elbow going bad isnt going to cause your car to smoke, unless the smoke is coming from under the hood, and not the exhaust.

                Re: Smoke

My car started smoking alot once it gets below zero. I would just wait for it to warm up and see if the problem goes away. Unless it's knocking, coolant in oil or running rough with check engine light.

Nope i dont have any of those issues maybe a couple bearings out like power steering (Which im changing next week) and i think a idler pully is going out. But besides that still running great. The only reason i think i need to change the intake and valve cover gaskets are because their is alot of black spots around the edges of them. (Im thinking leaks)

Keep checking your oil. See if you are consuming more than usual. If aren't consuming more than 2 or 3 quarts per oil change, I wouldn't worry about it, just keep it topped.

well i leak from my oil pan so i dont think i could check how much i loose as far as if its in the engine

Well, perhaps my use of the word "consume" was a poor choice on my part. When I said to check how much your car "consumes," what I really meant to say was how much oil you need to pour into the crankcase to maintain a proper operating level between oil changes. If the sum of the amounts added between each oil change is less than 2 or 3 quarts, then your engine is loosing an acceptable amount of oil. If it's more than that, or if it bugs you or you really want to tear into the engine, then it may need some fixing.

I have heard of loosing 1 quart per a 3,000 mile oil change interval is acceptable. 2-3 quarts in this time period is definitely not acceptable. At that point I would change my oil maybe once every 15,000 miles since it is loosing so much it will always stay clean

Ha ha! Seem like you could just keep pouring it in and never have to change the oil!

Perhaps it would be easier to add it to the gas like a 2 cycle at some point. What is "acceptable" oil loss will definitly vary from person to person. Personally I don't want to be loosing more than a quart of oil per 3000 miles either and I'd be looking for the problem too.

GM, however defines an acceptable oil loss at 1 quart per 1000 miles. If you think about it from a cost/benifit perspective, the 3 quarts per 3,000 to 5,000 mile oil change interval starts to make sense. Is the oil loss burning nearly as completely as the fuel (not causing major air polution?). Is the loss harming the engine in some way? Is the loss so rapid that the user can't keep it topped off reliably? If the answer to those would be "no" then why are you fixing an engine that is otherwise rock solid except for that teaspoon of oil that's burning with each gallon. (okay I didn't do the math on that ratio, but you get the idea).

I'd love to say that if your burning more than a half a quart per 3,000miles, you have an affirmative duty to tear that engine apart, rehone those cylinders and replace the piston and valve guide seals as well as any leaky seals. Practically though that's too expensive to do and could lead to more problems (from errors in assembly etc). You may want to shell out the time and money to fix it when the problem is ony one quart per oil change, but some comfort can be taken if you want to push it to 3 quarts per oil change in what the manufacturer finds "acceptable" based on their own design chriteria.

I burn a bit over 1 quart in 3,000 but my dipstick still blows out! What's up with that.
