  • What is the best fuel pump for a '97 V6 Camaro?

    Hey all :)

My fuel pump is dying and a buddy of mine who is way more mechanically inclined than I am is going to help me drop the gas tank and swap it out. I don't want to get a cheap fuel pump that'll fail soon...

...what's the best fuel pump for my 1997 Camaro V6? It's stock.

    Thank you!!!

EDIT: Oh, also, I figure I should probably replace the fuel filter as well... How much does that matter and what would you recommend?

WTF does your name mean? And a Walbro or stock replacement might be your best shot at a fuel pump.

Thank you :) Would THIS type of pump work? My car is not super or turbocharged...

      To answer your question...

Deoxyribonucleicacid is what DNA stands for.
I replaced "acid" with vitriol, which is sulfuric acid, which sounds a bit like petrol, fuel for cars.

I guess I was in a biochemically inclined mood when I created this account years ago :)

Stock fuel pump and stock fuel filter from RockAuto unless you need it asap then your favorite local NAPA or AC Delco dealer for quality parts. Saving your money is your real benefit in the long run.

My '96 fired right up after priming it up via ignition key to Start and the fuel pump hum was music to my ears. The fuel filter is a 10 minute job your buddy can do so naturally there's your starting point to get into the wrenching mood.

Without hesitation or fear, I did the trap door method behind the rear seat with a Dremel tool with an extra cutting bit wheel. It's far easier than dropping the rear fuel tank. You can do the self rewarding job yourself in less than 3 hours with success without anyone to assist you. Credit to my local Home Depot for everything you need for DIY projects.

If you're dead set on a Walbro, check out this video first. It just shows you how to install one using the trap door method but the procedure is for any fuel pump stock or not. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1_rmWLI4Lbs. Walbro = race car applications with nitrous or boost if you're into that.

My '96 Camaro is currently at 329,500 miles at the odometer. All stock with AC Delco or NAPA quality parts.

You can view my fuel pump DIY project here. I could not wait for a Walbro as I needed my ride for date night that same day! Got lucky afterwards :)

Racetronix is the best. The only Walbro that will work the same way your stock pump did.

More expensive but it's the only one that comes with a proper in tank harness, stock like fuel tube, filter sock and instructions. It also uses your factory fuel bucket. GM put it in there for a reason!

Yours is a 97' so I would go with a Walbro 255 ,do the back hatch mod , ditch the bucket use 2 hose clamps to put it together and make sure the fuel hose is on tight, might take you 2 hours at the most to do. For fuel filter just get a Fram the flow very well.

                  Thank you everyone!

Forgive my ignorance, but what is the bucket and why is it okay to throw it away?

BUMP - after reading up, I'm inclined to choose the racetronix. It says it's for LT1, though. ...it will definitely work for my 3800 II V6?

EDIT: Bah, nevermind. I see the Racetronix kit uses the 255 pump.

E-mail them, they will make one for you with a different lower flowing pump if you'd like :) Although it's probably the same price. You can still use a 255 on a stock car if you want.

They claim that it is different than a regular run of the mill Walbro 255lph pump. We will see.... It does have a spiffy aluminum housing that is supposed to fit the bucket better. I have the Walbro "direct replacement" pump in my car and the rubber sleeve kinda fits like ****. Also, you have to watch out for the line from the pump to the top hat of the bucket, as it will deteriorate. Mine lasted about 3 months. Hopefully the Racetronix setup lasts a little longer.

The Racetronics pump for the 98 LS1 was a direct fit on my 98 V6. You can always call and them ask.

93-97, 98 and 99+ cars all have different pump set ups.
                            :)

In the 99+ cars there is a sleeve so the pump fits better and it retains the stock venturi function so you can actually use all the gas in your tank.

WE DO NOT RECOMMEND THE TRAP-DOOR METHOD TO INSTALL FUEL PUMPS. IT IS VERY DANGEROUS AND CAN LEAD TO PREMATURE PUMP FAILURE:
