  • I finally found out what was wrong with my Firebird...

I decided to just make a new thread... in regards to...
    http://forum.camarov6.com/showthread.php?t=103454

The mechanic who installed my Racetronix pump did a **** job...

    What was happening is this...

At idle, I was receiving 40 PSI... but under a load, it dropped to 15 PSI... We didnt check the pressure under a load assuming that if it was fine at idle, then it would be fine under a load and I didn't want to spend $500 dropping the axel, but after taking it to a new mechanic I ended up doing that anyway...

    What we found was...

My Racetronix pump was full of sludge and I honestly believe my previous mechanic sabotaged it...

They DIDN'T use ANY of the retainer bolts, they just threw the pump in there and it rattled around...

They ALSO didn't replace my heatshield!!! My car COULD have blown up!

Right now it's being replaced with a stock fuel pump, I'm going to have one hell of a talk with the previous Mechanic though...

Glad you figured it out, should of done the hatch mod, that way its 10 min. to take it out for a look. I wouldn't worry about the heat sheild mines been off for years now and no problems in the AZ heat,W/ the exhaust in the rear before axle.

I'd think buzzing through your fuel lines and wires with a cutter would be a pretty big bummer :P

Well... after 6 months of trickery, my car is running again without problems... ...and I want to punch my ex-mechanic in the face.

Def. don't use the mechanic who first installed the pump. Good luck .

Oh trust me, he got a nice chat with me :)

But now this leaves me to questioning about mods in the future... cuzz I still want to do an LSX swap but Im afraid this will happen again if I change the fuel pump to a racetronix... what will happen if I just go with an in-line booster pump?

The first bit was hell, because the car overheated and died on the same day aswell as smoked white smoke leading me to believe that the headgaskets where blown... what really happened was coolant was spilling down to the bottom of the engine and came from UNDER the car, and not out of the exhaust, but its hard to tell the difference when looking from the mirror. That turned out to be a $4 faulty coolant elbow... but my car still didn't start and since it overheated we were still lead to believe it was a bad headgasket or intake gasket, but the compression test showed 140 PSI on every cylendar...when the book only calls for 100 PSI, meaning my compression was just fine... My mechanic (who was a friend who was trying to get the job done cheaper for me) didn't want to deal with the fuel pump and ran a bunch of other tests. He found the MAF was bad, and I needed O2 sensors... He replaced all my plugs, wires, and coils aswell, although I told him they were just replaced 30k mles ago, I did it for the sake that coolant possibly could have gotten into stuff when my car overheated. The MAF probably WAS bad, but it wasn't the reason my car wasn't starting, nor was the O2 sensors. We replaced all of that and although the car did start up a bit better, it wouldnt drive longer than 10 minutes before giving up.. I got pissed at him for wasting about $500 worth of parts and he insisted that I needed these parts, but Im like, it still runs exactly the same as it did when I got the car back from the shop and he really needed to get a closer look at the fuel pressure (which is another thing he was slightly evasive on... he would check it at idle and it would seem stong and he didnt other with it afterward.) Well... HE came to the conclusion that my fuel pump was oversupplying my motor with so much fuel that my fuel injectors couldn't open... On hindsight now, I think they were opening, but didnt have any fuel to deliver so my car was running too lean while driving it, and it felt that way too... Thats probably why I lost my O2 sensors, because running lean = hotter exhaust = saiyanara O2's... None the less he came to the conclusion that the fuel pump needed to be replaced... I came to a conclusion that I needed a better mechanic... and called a shop who I knew worked on F-Bodies...I should have went there first but I was trying to avoid a $1,000 repair bill... ...so I spent about $1,500 instead... oh well... live and learn.

Getting it fixxed to running only took 1 day, but now I'm out of a high flow fuel pump and dont have the confidence to try another racetronix pump after that happened... so I dunno how I'm going to do my motor swap now...

Walbro is even more difficult to install than racetronix from what I hear, too many modifications required...

They're the same pumps. The racetronix kit comes with a walbro.

I thought the internals of the Racetronix was a walbro but the body of the pump was different...

I still would really like to know what went wrong in the install of this fuel pump that lead to this though... i'm not sure if I trust another racetronix / walboro going into the car...

What should I do the next time? The guy who fixxed my car is good and reputable and works with F-Bodies - he had 5 of them sitting outside when I arrived at his shop... but the problem is he doesnt work with aftermarket fuel pumps...

Do you think its because I installed a V8 pump in a V6 car?
