  • How Fast

    Hi Guys,

Simple question, How fast does a standard 3.8 Auto go?

Ive never had the oportunity to drive mine flat out and I can't find any information regarding 0-60 times or top speed unlike the V8's which is all printed.

I've had mine up to 120 and it was still pulling stong but then I had to ease off.

So, has anyone had there's flat out. Im talking about a standard engine no tweaks or add on's. Maybe a uprated exhaust is OK but nothing else.

    I'm interested to find out.

    Cheers

Speed limiter is 118 mph fuel cutoff.

Sorry, I don't understand. Are you saying that the US cars have a limiter built into them.?

yes. the engine limited electronically to what the factory tires were rated for (118mph).

with no limiter I've heave they can do somewhere in the mid 130 range.

I have had mine to 137mph, had more left into it,this is with Hptuners , I still had another gear at the time. With a good running 3.8 my guess would be at least 160 mph.

My dash reads about 1 mph slow for every 10 mph. I had the dash at around 120. It would wind out third and tag fourth, slow down and back into third. my guess is about 130ish for me. Stock 1/8th mile for me, not a damn thing done was a 9.79 or something like that, I don't have the time slip any more.

I have no idea what kind of tune my car has on it as it was like that when I got it, but the engine is all stock and mine still pulls past 125. I always let off there though because I wouldn't know how fast I'm going after that since the speedo ends at 125. Mine is an M5 though btw..

                  Re: How Fast

                  Well 0-60 on a 1996 Camaro RS is 7.3 and 1/4 mile run is 15.5 at 95mph.

Nobody knows the top speed because of the electronic fuel cut off.

I know that James 12secV6 has gone 153mph on his modded Firebird. I think he still had more to tap on.

It will pretty much outrun the car's aerodynamic stability.

                        Re: How Fast

Thanks for all the info guys, all very interesting. My speedo is in Klm and it was reading 200 which is about 120 so allowing for speedo error I suppose I was near the limit.

So, a couple of more questions. If the fuel cuts out at 118mph what happens?

Does it cut back in again when you drop down below that speed or does it slowly grind to a halt until you restart it?

And of course is there any way around the limiter?

                        Thanks guys,

                          Re: How Fast

Your speed is cut off by the fuel so you won't go over 118 mph , it just goes on and off so the car still will go 118mph just won't go past it.

                            Re: How Fast

A tuner can remove the limiter but you have to make sure your tires and other components can withstand the high speeds.

I'm curious as to why you want to do high speed runs. The goal most people have is to make their cars accelerate faster. Almost anything can reach some pretty high speeds given they have enough road to make it there.

                              Thanks for the replies guys.

No I'm not interested in going faster and have no intention of trying to make my car anything different than standard. I'm already regretting fitting the Magnaflow Cat-back system but being here in the Uk it was cheaper than importing a new standard exhaust, plus they rust too quick in our climate.

No I was just interested thats all. I know some of our european cars are limited but thats at 155mph so I just thought the 118mph was rather low but now I know that it's based on the tyre speed rateing that makes sense.

                              Cheers
