  • 3.8l V6 CPS (Crankshaft Position Sensor)

I found out my problem with my 98 3.8l v6 5spd Bird finally..... Had it fully diagnosed today and found out Bank 2 Sensor 1 Oxygen Sensor is bad..... Crankshaft Position Sensor is bad.....

    Question is....

Where is the Crankshaft Position Sensor located??
I looked from the top and didnt see it anywhere... I already picked up the new one.... I'm guessing it is located under the crank pulley and has to be gotten to from under the car??

Also, is there anything special I need to do or program or adjust when I change the CPS out? or is it just unbolt and unplug old one, plug in new one and bolt on, reset engine light and go?? I read somewhere about CASE LEARN, but not sure if this would fall into the same category....

Thanks all ahead of time for your help and input....

It's almost at the bottom, but it's going to take some work to get to it:

    1. Remove neg. wire from the battery first
    2. Remove belt
    3. Remove crankshaft balancer
    4. Detach the retainer clip for the oil and fuel pump wires
    5. From there you can detach the CSP wire
    6. Remove CSP shield by removing the two screw and then pull straight to remove it

      awesome....

glad i went and got a second opinion on what was wrong with car, before i dumped $300 on new injectors....

I have an OBD-II scanner, so I can reset everything by it without disc. battery.... but i might do battery anyways, just to make sure

        glad im changing parts myself....

the shop wanted $410 to replace CPS, 1 Oxygen Sensor and the Tranny Mount.... I said screw that... I have the tools, I can do it myself.... I just wanted 2nd opinion before dumping money into car, cuz the shop that said injectors, didnt really seem certain that was the problem.....

The bolt is TTY. You can get it at the dealership, or order it from ZZP. Put a dab of rtv on the new bolt when going back on. The bolt is going to be tight. I used a 3/4" m-pact with about 175psi of air to remove. Others have gotten it out with lengthy beak-over bars. Your also going to need a large pulley puller. I want to say mine was a 8" puller from harbor freight. I also remember reading a couple of threads where guys were looking into upgrading to a newer harmonic balancer, but I dont recall the end results of those threads. ZZ's is probably overkill, and the only one they have in stock is 5% overdrive. It's interesting they claim the stock balancer is only safe until 6300 rpms. They also have a pretty viable arguement for removing the balance shaft for higher revving engines.

yea, it takes no time, but they were swamped... so instead of driving car back home and then back up again tomorrow, i decided to leave it.... save some wear and tear and gas, etc... its 20 min drive each way...

I took it to the mechanic shop that does the work thats beyond me, that i dont have the equipment to do... they're really good... and they even do performance stuff, too....
