Hello everyone, this is my first post here. Anyways I got a 2001 camaro with the y87 package and a few small things done to it from my brother for an unbelievable price. It is an auto, I put 4.10 gears in it a few years ago, along with a custom catback and high flow cat. What I am wondering about is how durable these engines actually are? It has about 100k and runs great besides the occasional misfire that i think i tracked down to corroded connectors on the ICM, they were green, I sanded them down, did my best to scrape inside of coil connectors clean and now I haven't had a problem in a few weeks.
But I was looking into doing some more work on the car. With 100k I am debating if I want to keep it a v6, do heads\cam and possibly a nitrous wet kit I can get from a friend for a decent price along with headers and maybe order the parts to get the trans rebuilt as an LS1 trans if it starts acting up.
Or my other possible option would be more costly, and much more work but would pay off in the end. I am possibly thinking of getting a 5.3L and all the necessities (been doing a lot of reading)
Either way, most of the work will be done by me, I used to be an apprentice mechanic at a Ford dealer, but came across something that paid much better. I still have all my tools and quite a few guys that could help me out. One guy I worked with has a 2002 with a twin turbo setup that required a tubular K-member so i can get his factory one and a lot of the factory v8 suspension parts for a good price.
Although the v8 would be more powerful in the end, I think it would be fun to have a v6 that can atleast hang with some of the ls1 guys.
What are your opinions on this? V6 with 100k with heads\cam and maybe a 50 shot? Or 5.3L with probably just a cam?
And sorry for such a long first post lol
