  • No harmonic balancer anywhere in the US? Help!

Crankshaft sensor bad. Balancer wobbly and worn. Replacement part doesn't exist any longer--even GM says they're obsolete? WTH? Where in the hell can I find a replacement for a 2000 Camaro 3.8 V6? Son of buck. There is NOTHING in a Google search.

Find one for any 3.8l L36 GM car. Even a used one suffice for the meantime.

        From www.rockauto.com

        Dorman part #594004 $63.79

        ATP part #102074 $72.99

        ACDelco part #12563267 $149.79

That was easy. Don't always rely on specifically GM to supply parts. Many aftermarket companies make OEM parts, and will for a long time.

Thanks for the input and help. I went on Ebay and found a Dorman for $76.26 including shipping. I bought it from thepartsstore. I'll have it by Monday which is great!

@FirebirdGT--I got the info on no available parts from the garage I took the car to; he replaced the sensor and I'm taking the car back next week after the balancer comes in. I'm guessing (don't know for sure) that garages only want to deal with actual part stores or dealerships. Luckily, he's cool with my getting the part and slapping it on for me. A lot of places in my neck of the woods won't do that for a customer these days.

Because there are liabilities involved with bringing your own parts to install, especially at chain shops. That and most shops like to add 10 or 20% of the part they install on markup.

x2 - actually needs to be done when replacing the crankshaft sensor

Yes, the relearn was done after the sensor replacement.

I'm wondering what else I need besides the balancer and the bolt? Do I need a sleeve and some lube too? I don't want the repair delayed because of my ignorance. As it stands, the shop is individually owned and he's not charging me a fee aside from the labor, so I'd prefer to bring him everything he needs to avoid additional charges.

He did say there wasn't anything wrong with the bolt, but I read in these forums that you should just replace it when you're installing a new balancer. It's a $7 part, so either way it's no big deal.

Almost had a heart attack! Search on Amazon said the Dorman 594-004 didn't fit on my 2000 V6 Camaro. Ebay says it does. Good gawd. I hope I'm not getting the wrong part? MoGobs 30th has the same information I do. I was about to blow a gasket!

I wish I knew more about cars. I hate being a total novice.

Re: No harmonic balancer anywhere in the US? Help!

There was no change in the crank design from 1995 - 2002 in the L36 that I know of. A 1995 balancer will work on a 2002 crank.

GM changed the design of the balancer for 1997 model engine. The 97+ balancer is better - if GM part.

I have the newer GM balancer on my 96.

True, but that's the balancer itself. I didn't think there was a design change to the crank itself that would prevent one model year balancer to not work on another model year. Technically, a 95 balancer will work on an 02, correct?
