  • Just got done doin' some tinkerin'...

In the wake of my excitment for my new SLP intake box that is on it's way, i decided to do a little tinkering on my bird.

I've been getting a lot of "running lean" trouble codes (P0171 & P0174) and i read that it could be due to a dirty MAF sensor. I've never cleaned one, so i decided to do that. I don't think it helped any, because i just got the 174 code by itself. Not sure what could be the problem. I'm fairly certain the sensor are only a few years old, but i think my next tinker is to replace them.

which leads me to a question.....

I think there should be a sensor in front of the cat converter and one after it, right? I found the one behind it, but i don't see one in front of it. I have the pacesetter headers, that go into a 2-to-1 Ypipe that is welded to the front of the cat. I don't see a sensor around there anywhere. I do however feel a piece of metel sticking out of the side (towards the driver's side) of the Ypipe that feels like a sensor SHOULD be there, but it's just a solid piece. Does anyone know where the other sensor is???

I also ordered and installed the hypertech 180* thermostat. it was pretty easy to put in and then i used the power programmer III to adjust the fans. i doubt i'll notice anything, but it was fun to do.
I wasn't sure what my stock thermostat was. I've read that the 2000+ came with 180*, while the older ones were a 195*. I've also read that they all came with 195*. Not sure which is true, but my 2000 had a 195* in it. It always runs a little bit below the 210 mark on the gauge. we'll see where it runs at now.

I also put in a new PCV unit and other than doing a couple little small clean-up things...it was a fun time to tinker with it in the driveway on a sunday afternoon. i think it's time for a shower then a beer and see what's on netflix!

added the new hypertech 180* thermostat yesterday and the car still runs at the same temp.
My old thermostat was a 195. I put the new one in and even adjusted the fans using the hypertech programmer. Still the same.
Went and did an entire coolant flush (needed it anyways). Still the same.

it seems it doesn't really matter what thermostat you have. my car runs a needle-width below the 210* mark on the gauge.

    ......just thought this was interesting....

      and the plot thickens....

got home a little while ago (from getting the flush) and decided to let it cool down and top it off with water.
while doing so, i double checked the resevoir (passenger side coolant thing) and after unscrewing the cap and looking at the stick...it's still full of brown gunk. it looks like someone took a big duece in the resevoir.
I also noticed that the bleeder valve on the thermostat housing (to bleed any air in the system) wasn't touched. I got it back up to temp, and slightly unscrewed it....nothing. a little more....nothing. i couldn't get a single drop of fluid to come out, even after taking the screw completely out.

      what's going on??!!
      is this normal??

Sounds like there is either a huge air bubble or just not enough coolant.

Also, the temp gauge is not accurate, it pretty much always sits just below 210 under normal conditions. If it really started getting hot it may move above 210. The only way to know the true temperature is to use a scan tool to read what the PCM is seeing.

One last thing.... The thermostat only controls the minimum temperature, because that's when it opens. Once it's opened, the temperature is going to be 181 or higher... probably a lot higher. What is the temperature you have the fans set to?

i set the fans to whatever the hypertech programmer set them to. i don't remember the exact temps off hand.

i did another flush and even though there is still some gunk in the overflow bottle, it was draining clear. i checked the thermostat and, i'm happy to say, there was fluid in there and i was able to bleed it a little. it's not ideal, but i'll live with it for now.

i am a little sad that the new 180* thermostat doesn't really read any changes on the gauge. i'm sure it's working, but it would have been nice to see it, know what i mean? :)

i can't remember where our bleeder screws are right off. but i've seen dexcool clog them solid.
