  • questions on my first 3.4 firebird

hello everybody i recently picked up a 1994 firebird that is a project car and i had some questions, in the power distrobution box under the hood is every spot supposed to be full with relays because mine does not have any relays on the right side of the box. also what is a normal operating temp of these and when are the fans supposed to come on? One last question i have a pretty bad oil leak and its in the rear of the motor and its dripping down on my y pipe would this most likely be the rear main seal leaking?

Not every relay location is used. I'm not sure what temp the relays run at but I'm sure they can get warm. Before you go blaming the rear main seal check the valve cover gaskets and also the oil pump drive seal. The oil pump drive seal is located behind the lower intake manifold. The location was used for the distributor on earlier models. The oil drive cap has a U clamp with one bolt holding it down. If no oil residue is above the rear main location then it's probably the leak.

Remove the bolt and clamp then you will need to pry the oil pump drive up in order to remove it. A good sharp screwdriver or pry bar will work.It can be a struggle sometimes to remove.
There is a hex rod that connects the drive to the oil pump it usually stays with the oil pump but sometimes it comes out with the drive.
After you remove the oil pump drive you will see the o ring on the outside of the shaft. Remove and replace with new seal.

Get a flashlight and a mirror and check to see if it is centered and standing straight up. If not you need to use a magnet to pull it out.
Then get a 1/4 inch drive socket that fits the rod and an extension so you have some way of turning it when you drop it into place. I like to tape the socket to the extension so I don't drop the socket. If it is in the oil pump there should be some resistance when you turn the socket wrench.
