  • right oil presure?, and ticking noise when start up?

so i live in Texas and today its like officialy cold for alot of people (not me) .

its 52 outside and windy. and as i turned on my firebird.
as soon as i do that i hear a tick tick tick tick tick noise and after 20 -30 seconds has passed it goes away.

this engine is new to me i swaped out my old one cause it died at 140,000 miles:( i only had the chance to put in 100 miles into the old one when i bout the car

the oil is only 300 miles old and its 10w-30

also my oil pressure on idel is 90 psi and when driving its around 115
idk if that's normal or not i have a 4th gen year 2000 and the s2 3.8 engine no mods just strait stock

any suggestions why it does that tick noise and if that's the right oil pressure it should be at?

Sounds about right, mines reads 90 at idle but I don't think its accurate. Only way to be accurate is put a manual gauge on it.

I would try a quart of Rizlone as it did wonders for my 2000, 3.8 but don't overfill,
Drain oil out if it is all topped up now.

my 3.8 is about 45psi at idle and 60 above 2000 rpm, I believe thats on spec with what my haynes manual says

edit* ticking on startup could be caused by a crappy oil filter, fram is notorious for this

I have a very similar situation. 02 camaro 3.8l series II. About 2/3 of the way threw my current oil life, 2000 miles or so, id hear the same tick coming. Only on cold starts, even during summer. Would go away after 30 sec or so. Before my next oil change I put some seafoam in the oil and then changed it. Used a good filter and oil, forgot which brand. This helped. It barely did it, and when it did it would go away after 1 sec on start up. Now that its getting very cold out. 40s or less in ny its doing it a little longer.

In regards to what it is. My dad who's pretty mechanically inclined thinks its the hydraulic lifters. Could be a little blocked preventing oil to drain completely. This would also make sense since oil is thicker when cold. It could also be a little slack in the lifter itself, and after a few seconds enough oil and pressure get to the lifter to firm it up and get rid of the slack.

In a week or two the camaros going into storage and im going to pull the valve cover off and see if any lifters are loose. Ill post any info.

            Hope this helped at all.
