  • Very Loud Engine Noise. Help Please!

So I just got the engine done in my car, as I have said several times, but it is making some weird noises. The dealer said it was characteristic of the 3800 but I dont think it made this noise for them. Its really loud and gross sounding. Here is the link to the video.

I have no idea what to do about it. It sounds like its coming from inside the motor. The whining noise is the alternator I think, but the marble noise or the rattle is terrible and I have no clue what it is. Your input is appreciated. I don't know if I should take it back or not. Its not quite as loud as when I spun a bearing but its too much racket. Sad thing is the car has a misfire too (P0300) put it runs like a champ after it stutters.

That's not normal. Take it back. It may be causing the P0300 code also because any engine knocking/tapping can cause a false setting of a misfire code. On the flip side, if there is a loose spark plug, that could cause both.

yea hes right , a sensor might be picking it up and throwing the code. try this, get a screw driver, turn on the car and put the tip of the screw drive and put it on different places on the motor. when you put it on diferent places put the handle part agains your ear . where ever the noise gets louder thats where its coming from this should narrow it down

Could it be piston slap? My buddy thinks it could be piston slap based on loose tolorances. Does anyone have a video of their rebuilt v6 for reference? Could that just be noisey pistons?

If it was rebuilt right, it wouldn't have any noises.

Or they actually make a gadget that's like a doctors stethoscope with a needle on the end to pinpoint noises

Has it thrown a rod...that would make a loud noise that repeats, repeats.

It threw a rod bearing initially thats why i had to get it rebuilt..... It runs good despite that noise and a misfire. Spins right up to 6000 RPM but sounds terrible. I am going to take it back tomorrow. Is it not piston slap though? If it is, is that acceptable?

not thats not acceptible that will just wear out you cylinde wall and then you will start to burn oil and the noise will get more loud.

If it has been rebuilt it shouldn't have any questionable noise.

I happen to agree. I just had people tell me its normal, and I just didnt think so. If I have to do the motor again, I am thinkin Heads and Cam. I just hope to get at least 300 RWHP if I do. I also want to put some 10.5:1 Pistons in so I can make some actual power. I mean if they have to tear it apart anyway, might as well.

Again, the noise is not normal. I don't care what anyone tells you, it's not normal.

I also do not recommend revving it to 6000 RPM. Won't last long doing that.

Take it back. Get it looked at. Could be something simple.
