The "service engine soon" light came on in my 02 camaro the other day so I took it to get scanned at Auto Zone. Code p0402 came up and the guy said I need a new catalytic converter. Then later that day the fan kicked on and the temperature gauge stopped working. The fan runs constantly as soon as I start the engine and temp gauge is still not working. I have a 160degree thermostat so I'm wondering if I need to replace my thermostat. Will getting a new cat fix all the problems or is the fan kicking on constantly a separate problem?

Re: P0402 code and fan kicking on
Hmm... Im not sure since I dont have a wiring diagram at home now but Im pretty sure the fan problem is separate from the cat. I dont think theres any wiring for the cat to melt other than O2 sensor wires. If your fans are staying on then a relay maybe stuck or they might be linked to the IC and constantly reading hot. But im no gm expert, Im inside of mazdas all day. Ill read up tomorrow.

cmon dudes, theres a whole post with every code right here:
http://forum.camarov6.com/showthread.php?t=63690
the fans kick on and stay on anytime there is a code thrown
lastly, dont listen to a retard from autozone, theyre idiots 99.9% of the time.
your EGR valve is either bad, leaking or the pipe leading to the exhaust manifold is cracked.
as for the gauge, probably a bad sensor or maybe its just because of the code, theyre dummy gauges anyhow. fix the EGR problem and see if it works afterwards. at worst its a wiring problem. unless the thermo is stuck open, which is easy enough to check out, pull it and put it under some water and see if its opening and shutting at different temps.

Re: P0402 code and fan kicking on
the code is pretty descriptive to me. EGR is malfunctioning. theres only 3 things it can be. ive been around these cars for longer than some members have been on the planet. common code, common problem, annoying to fix. better off buying block off plates and tuning the code out. unless youre in cali, then youre going to have to fix it to pass emissions tests

Re: P0402 code and fan kicking on
Sorry I forgot the code. I think there were actually 2 codes p0420 and p0430 so I guess it actually is a cat problem. I have a 160 degree thermostat and haven't got around to tuning it. I'm wondering if this caused my camaro to run to rich and clog my catalytic converter? Also should i use 160, 180 or go back to the stock thermostat? Should a 160 and a tune fix this running rich problem? (if that even is the problem) because I don't want my cat to get messed up again
