Dumbest thing uttered. One of the most reliable engines ever produced on this planet, due to the fact it was fuel efficient, simple, and inexpensive. Your wifes import is a hunk of **** that would cost an arm and a leg to repair in parts. Nothing personal, but you know jack **** about these cars. There are some respectable DOHC cars out there, one being a Terminator Mustang. But most of your import engines with DOHC aren't as reliable as what the consensus would like you to believe. Not to mention they're nothing short of a pain to repair, and it WILL need repair.

Hint of advice, stick around and learn a few things before running your throathole.

I am going to do some more research and I am getting close to making up my mind, if I am going to build this thing, or do something else with it.
It was never meant as a high performance option. It was a base model engine used in a sports car. People who bought them wanted the looks without the gas guzzling V8. In its stock form its a reliable engine used to sip gas on highway. It wasn't meant to do what you're doing to it, and what you're doing to it (running it up to 6000 rpm and 80 mph in 2nd gear) is insanely stupid for ANY car not made for such abuse. Its not a race car with exotic metals being used for valvetrain parts. You'll end up floating a valve and smacking a piston, bending a pushrod, or spinning a bearing. Now if you WANT to do those stupid things to your engine and car, mod it. The parts are out there to do what you are already doing to it. But do it right.

            Re: General Questions

            Weak points:
            Oil supply. Plain and simple.

For high HP, high rpm or both, you need to look at oiling mods. Ported/deburred oil pump housing, larger ports on the oil galleys, larger holes for the mains and also a secondary oil line running to the back of the motor to help distribute the supply all the way across. This is from talking with somebody that has built a few of these engines, and also looking at specs on the ZZP & INTENSE race blocks. I haven't done a whole lot of this on my engine other than the oil pump and filter bypass mod.

You start running high rpms on a high mile motor and you'll start to get more slop from the worn bearings, and worn out harmonic balancer, running the chance of spinning a rod or even a main bearing.

While we're on the subject of oil, look up oil quality tests, I believe Royal Purple is considered to be junk.

Our other weak spot is the cylinder head design is far from optimal. It's good for daily driver stuff but you have to essentially port the hell out of it to get it to flow for higher HP aps, but then you sacrifice good velocity at lower rpms. 6000 rpms on stock heads/cam is just wasted gas like I mentioned in your other thread.

no, no, in stock trim they can be quite potent still. Lee's car is in the stock class...which is a stockerish trim.

i.e: Heads cannot be port/polished, neither can the intake manifold, block can't be stroked...the car essentially needs to have stock specifications with the exception of the cam....

and he's run 12.3x to date and the car has a helluva lot more in it. Actually, I think he made that pass on exhaust manifolds and not even with headers.

Granted the car is not "stock" but it is not stupidely modified either

Yup not stock, but on original manifolds. Good luck keeping an engine on the street for long with that type of cam. Those lobes are straight up CRAZY!
