  • 3:42:1 GU6 Gears

Okay so my car has the GU6 production code on it and I was pretty sure I had 3:42's prior to looking into it. 1st gear is kinda low for only a 4-speed transmission. Basically I did the LSD test when I was putting on my rear brakes today and I turned one wheel and the other wheel turned the opposite way. I thought that means you DON'T Have an LSD? My car had a rear sway bar and I know thats the right ratio but I am not sure why it didnt pass the LSD test. Any ideas?

Because the Zexel Torsen doesn't act like a regular LSD until it needs to. I freaked out a while back with the same issue. If your car's got the Y87 RPO code, you've probably got an LSD.

Well I just know that I have the GU6 code and I know I have 3.42:1 ratio. I was just surprised when it didnt pass the normal LSD test. So your pretty sure it has an LSD?

I think G80 is correct. Look for that or Y87. Any y87 car should have it.

Is it a 1995 model? The 1995 3.8 cars got an open diff with 3.42 gears.

GU6 and G80 will give you 3.42 and posi. Not a very common option, I'm glad I have it as it makes it much easier to cruise in 6th gear at lower speeds.

You and your 6 gears... I'd kill for that with my 4.10s.

If the car is an 01 and you see Y87 in the list of RPOs, you have the Zexel Torsen limited slip diff. It will not react the way one expects using the "LSD test".

But if you exit a turn hard then floor it, you'll feel the limited slip action.

So the 2001 has the Limited slip, it just acts differently? Yeah it has the GU6 code. Im not sure about the Y87

I assume that the GU6 means you have the Y87. Is the Y87 in the same place I found the GU6?

All of the RPO codes should be on the sticker on the edge of the drivers door, where I'm guessing you got the GU6 code from.

I took a picture of that sticker so I could look up what my car was equipped with from the factory. If you search a little on google you should be able to find a list of what all the different codes mean for your car.

Oh okay, well thanks a lot. I appreciate it. I'll see if I can locate the Y87 code. I didnt think the 2001 had the Y87 Package. I thought it was pre 1998 but I learn something every time I look on here. Thanks guys.
