  • How many cylinders can I safely run on?

Serious question...How many cylinders can I safely run this motor on for a few minutes if I am unplugging both the injector and the spark plug boot for each cylinder I shut down.

Do I risk damage to the shut down cylinders by shutting down the injector and spark for that cylinder?

Why do you want to run without all cyl.'s?

emissions test, 2 speed idle...so this will be for all of 2-5 minutes. I might need to have a bit of time to tune it like this as well if the pcm tries to compensate by dumping fuel

yes...it was suggested by an emissions guy...but now the more I think about it, I am not sure if it would even work to reduce emissions to begin with

I dont think it would work, I would just try and run it lean as you can safely.

If passing emissions is the goal, there are obviously a lot of variables, but I would make sure your O2 sensors are in working order and your cat is as well. After that, try running some Sea foam or the equvilent fuel system cleaner. When you burn that all out use some premium gas and take it back. If you still dont pass, I would do a tune up, and make sure your coils are putting out enough voltage and your wires are not messed up.

I am not sure how many you can run without but I wouldnt reccomend that on any engine with the exception of any engine with cylinder deactivation (but even that does so under light loads not the 50mph they use on emission machines). Last thing That comes to the top of my head is the air filter and throttle body. Just clean it if you have a K&N or replace it if you dont. Throttle body cleaner is cheap and mass air cleaner can be used to clean the mass air flow (obviously).

Good luck man let us know if you get it to pass.

His car probably doesn't need a tune up, it's got a few "upgrades" that is what he's concerned about.

I could see running on 5 cylinders, but I don't know about driving like that. I've done the cylinder spark test by pulling a plug wire off a plug to diagnose a misfire, but that's at idle.. I'm glad we don't have to worry about emissions here!

all you can do is run as lean as you can thats it i wouldn't run on less cylinders , ive done it but not on purpose its not a good felling trust me your car will rock left and right and will sound like its dying

Emissions are tested in parts per million. so even if you have less overall exhaust it doesn't help.

So running on less cylinders wor do anything unless I randomly pull a plug from a cylinder that was randomly rich for some reason?
I kinda thought about that after, but wasnt sure

Ok, how lean can I safely make the car? It has to rev to 2500 rpm for the test, but wont be driven leaned out...

And ya sorry guys, tune up wont work... I appreciate the suggestions though. The motor has maybe 10k on it now... It's the giant cam that is going to cause it to fail

Retarding the timing and raising the idle speed helps with the idle test. If you have access to a emissions analyzer you can try that while reading the exhaust. Ive also heard that running methanol helps as the equipment doesn't pick that up.

Now I have never touched hp tuners or directly tuned but I've put a good number of hours away reading from those who do and I would say in theory this would be a cool idea. Problem is even with some of the injectors electrically disconected the tuning required to get that to run well seems intense. There are a lot of sensors expecting readings from the intake/exhaust of 6 cylinders. Plus the thing runs like crap with 2 of them not hitting. Many tables in the programming will try to compensate is my guess and the output will not be clean. I'd go for the lean tune as well - run high octane gas and go easy on it getting it there.

I know that 4 cyl. can fail just as 6 or 8.

Do you have a Cat, working o2 sensor, egr, pcv, maf, and so on? You should be OK.

If not then find a smog tech that will accept cash on the side. :naughty:
