  • Finally New motor

Okay so you guys know what noises the rebuilt motor in my car has been making. Well I got the money back from the engine shop and now I am going to install a GM crate 3800 into the car. I just wanted to ask you guys what else you think I should change while its out of the car.

Well there's the typical cam/heads. It depends on what your goal is with your car.

What did you pay for this GM engine. Is it rebuilt or new?

Its brand new. It was built on a GM assembly line. I am paying $3950 Parts and Labor at my local Chevy dealer. Its like a crate motor.

          Re: Finally New motor

I assume you will keep the car another ten years, unless its a convertible or a V-8,
the market value is about what you are paying the dealer....but certainly less than
a NEW car. I hope they give you an extensive warranty.

              Re: Finally New motor

For that kind of money, you could have bought a used, low-mile 3800III and did a head/cam swap, full exhaust and suspensions and still have money left over...

You ignore the body condition and the interior condition and the fact that the youngest
Camaro of our body type is now ten years old. If a person only drove 10K miles for ten years it would have 100,000 miles on it. Few people drive that little.
At least he knows what he is getting instead of a junk yard engine that is like buy a lotto ticket. I did that and it was a big, big mistake that I am unable to reverse.

You do this on every thread... Tons of people have had goodluck with junkyard engines, me included.

I have 62K on my 1997. There is plenty of low mile cars out there if you shop.

OP: That is a lot of coin given the value of our cars. Does your car have some sentimental value to you? If not, $4k seems like an awful lot for a V6 engine swap. 3800III are readily available and cheap, might want to consider that route and spend that money else where on your car. X2 on CFreed's post.

Yep, nothing wrong with a low mileage engine.

                        Re: Finally New motor

Whatever I say, if you get an engine frm a wreck...its a damn gamble...you cannot run it before you buy it...you spend money to put it in and once its in...you own it.
Junk yards offer just what the name implies. I think he paid a lot for the engine, but its his money and he knows just what he bought..no guessing, no fingers crossed.

                          Re: Finally New motor

To get a low mileage the car must have been sitting in the junk yard for about 5+ years.
Do you want an engine that has not been run in five years or more. A Camaro built in 2000 is thirteen years old.

You just don't get it. You can pick up a 3.8 from something other than a Camaro. Example: 2008 Buick Lucerne 3.8 motor.... easily can be obtained for cheap with low KMs LETZ RIDE and other members have done it.

Even if the motor has been sitting or is higher mileage... rebuild it... inspect it... do your homework. Don't just pay some random mechanic to install it, like you did.
