    Re: Finally New motor

I'm not going to be critical about how others spend their money. The reason I am doing this is because I can take it right back to Parkway Chevrolet if anything motor related breaks for the next 3 years or 100,000 miles. The 4L60E is fairly rebuilt, and I just did my whole suspension and bushings. My interior is clean, and new tires, wheels, and brakes just went on. I figure I can try and sell it, and if no one wants it, I will just drive it.

I was weary of rebuilding another motor because I paid around $2900 for a rebuilt motor and you guys heard what that sounded like. Crap. So I am done with the guess work, and the trips back and forth to the shop are absolutely killing me, with time. I will let you guys know how everything turns out when I get it back.

Do you want an engine that has not been run in five years or more. A Camaro built in 2000 is thirteen years old.
Thats why mechanical age/wear is determined by miles, not years. There are PLENTY of low mileage engines that haven't sat long in a junkyard that are there now. I could have bought atleast 8 engines for what he bought that crate motor for. I don't think your problems stemmed from the motor, I think it stemmed from whoever installed it.

Well that price is for a GM crate engine, transferring of intake and misc parts, labor, and a warranty.

and you may very well be right. I am just tired of a gamble. My car went through the original motor, 2 rebuilt motors, and is still making noise all in under a year. I bought it in August of 2012. I have no clue what caused all of this drama, but I am tired of it all. As you can probably imagine.

Well if it is warrantied, that makes the price pretty well worth it.

If you are determined to keep the Camaro, you logic sounds understandable to me.

Ninety five percent of Camaro owners have no ability, no facilitiy, no tools, no hoist to do an engine swap. You ignore this reality.

While I myself, dont have the tools or facility to do this, I have 3 friends that own shops or have a garage and would have no issue, allowing me to use them. I used one of them to do a rear main seal on my 280,000 mile 5 series I got rid of a while back. I'm just tired of the back and forth to the shop.

Then they're dumb for buying an 11+ year old car.

                    Re: Finally New motor

Congratulations on the new motor. I think the naysayers simply forget that it's not their car. The second guessing of what you might have done or could have done are endless. I had a transmission rebuilt by AAMCO once (years ago on a Sunbird). Never drove the same, and never, despite multiple returns to the shop, could get it to shift like it did before it broke. Should have done what you did, but it was livable, and anyone but me wouldn't notice.

I buy all new parts for my car, avoid rebuilt crap (especially from Autozone) like the plague. Some would say I'm foolish to spend 200 dollars on a "new" part when I can get a "like-new" part for 80 or 100. Funny how I've never had someone say that to me while they are helping me work on my car. Seems like we place a very low value when we judge other people's time, but never stop to consider that to that person, thier time fooling around may not be worth it.

Personally, I repair my 18 year old Camaro because I enjoy it and my wife appreciates it. If either of those changed I'd simply [Strike]get a new wife[/Strike] get a new car with a warranty and be done with it. Your decision to have a new motor put in seems like a good compromise to me.

Guess what I'm saying is that I think people are riding you too hard for a decision that seems reasonable to you. You're not going to convince others that what you did was the "right" decision, but who cares? Drive it, enjoy it.

Thanks man. I think its always important to remember that there is always compromise. You cannot escape it. With the route I am taking I am compromising extra money for quality and time not spent in the shop. In addition if I ever want to modify this motor, I know everything is the way it was from the factory. Yes I have to compromise some extra money to get it the way I want it, but to me, its worth not always going to the shop and having it run differently every day.
