  • 93 3.4L V6 power steering pump removal?

I need to get to the timing set on this car and the PS pump and bracket assembly does not want to move. I've got the 4 obvious bolts that go from aluminum bracket to head and to water pump and then pulled 2 of 4 of the pump to bracket. This thing is not ready to to roll out of the way, what am I not seeing?

Looks like there's a second nut holding the pump to the rear bracket. Looking at your picture it's at the tip of the top stud.

I think you need to remove the power steering pulley

I had read that you can take the pump and bracket as an assembly without removing the two from each other and then swing the assembly out of the way to get to the water pump. I'll pull the pulley in the morning and go from there. I should be into the timing cover by lunch and see if that is what stopped the engine from running. If not, further investigation will be required.

You do not need to remove the pulley. You only need to remove the pulley to access the bolts holding the pump to the bracket. Did you try prying on the bracket a little? Sometimes the engine paint can act like a good glue overtime.

I ended up just pulling the ps pulley and separating them and got it off. I'm down to the final part left being the stupid lower timing gear and I broke my cheap 3 leg gear puller trying to get it off. I'm at a stand still until I can pull that crank gear. Is there a better puller than a traditional 3 leg puller?

I don't know about on a 3.4 but I tried using a standard puller for mine, and ended up bending the pulley. There's a specific PS pulley puller.

I had the ps puller, my issue is the lower timing great on the crank snout. I broke my 2 ton 3 leg gear puller on it.

I had to use the small 2 leg Sears Craftsman puller and take a grinder to the claws to fit into the tight space.

Also had to red neck rig a gear press to put the new lower gear on. We are on the way back together now.

We are even doing some dress up on the way together.

What does a timing chain have to do with a power steering pump? Forgive my lack of 3.4 knowledge..

The 3.4 power steering bracket over laps on the water pump that is over the timing cover. To get the water pump off, the big aluminum power steering bracket had to come off first.
