Yesterday night I lost my keys, how hard is it to switch out the ignition for a new one???

VATS was disabled a while ago, by cutting cables and sticking resistors to start. How hard would it be for an average person??

It would be easier just take your registration to the dealer and have them give you keys, I think you'll need a BCM with adding a new lock. I know I had to use a different Bcm when I changed out my steering column to a 02'. I think the Bcm's are matched to your key.

If match you get the key from the dealer it should match the BCM then. They just use the vin and get you the right keys.

Saw bcm s on epay with key. Bought one actually. Anyway just read the chip on the new key/bcm with ohm meter then switcth out your resister to match new key/bcm and your done. My bad, do over, any key that turns your ignition will work if you already bypassed vats so just have a locksmith make a new one. 100 bucks?

Only problem I'm having if the previous owners switched out the cylinder yet, if they did then the key from the dealer will not work...

I have a spare key, but it doesnt unlock the cylinder. Is it cause its missing the little resistor chip?

                    Re: Lost keys!

The vats system reads the chip on your key , original post said you did away with the vats with a resistor chip. The key is just that a key. The resistor tells the bcm all is good. So if vats is disabled then the chip is now nothing ,nada, ziltch, dog poo etc. The bcm is reading the resistor not the key chip. I could now start your car with a screwdriver old school. That's why I'm sayin just have locksmith make a key to turn ignition, previously stated vats is already disabled no chip neccasary. If your not sure on the vats get back with me and I can explain how to override it.

Problem solved!! Chevy dealer gave me the right key!
Didnt want to tear down the steering column to change out the cylinder.

Yes Vats was disabled, but the spare i had a a flaw it didnt have a bump right were the resistor is on the original key, guess thats why it wasnt unlocking, Ill be making spares in a few days!
