    The 3.8L engine used in the SAE and ILSAC engine oil testing is not like the 3.8s in our cars. One major difference is that it's converted to a flat tappet camshaft whereas all the 3800s in 4Gen F-cars have hyd. rollers.

    The engine, also, has some other differences such as higher valve spring pressure.

    As for a 5W40 in a 3.8, I have no personal experience with that in a V6, but in other of my engines, the only one in which I use a 40wt is a modified Big-Block Chevrolet. Unless you have big bearing clearances or lots of piston clearance you don't need a 40 wt. As for the 5W part, if you live where you drive in cold winters, it's a good idea. If you live where it's hot a 5W is ok as long as it's a synthetic.

    In any event, you can't go wrong with Mobil 1 5W30 or Gibbs Driven LS30 5W30.
