  • stubborn 3.4 starting prob, possible vats?

    car: 94 camaro 3.4, 151k miles

problem: full power, ses light, fuel pump pressurizing, absolutely refuses to crank.

New parts: starter, battery, ignition switch, neutral safety switch.

For two weeks ive been working on this thing. It started twice for some reason after i put the new starter in. I get a abs inop, low trac, and brake light after i try to crank it. The only idea i have is the vats is screwed up. Has anyone had problems similar to this? The car clicks once and thats it. I also have a two way viper alarm i hope isnt messed up..

I tried to bypass the vats and only succeded in getting a constant security light or blinking security light. I even wired a key in before the connector and only got a blinking security light. Any help would be awesome if anyone has any idea what is wrong with my pos. I'm about to donate it to science. Thanks, ignore the sig its ancient.

Friend had almost the same problem as you. It would start the first couple of times, then you would shut it off then nothing. Then it would start once in awhile for 30 sec and die. I think it had a bad ground wire to the starter, wire got heated and fused to soemthing. Thats one of the things he said.

Im gonna ask him the next time i see him for all the details

If it is not cranking at all, you should check your power and ground wires on the starter for corrosion. Also, obviously make sure that the battery is in good shape. Check the wire leading from the neutral safety switch to the starter solenoid for continuance. If it is broken or not getting the voltage to the starter, it will not let the starter crank.

when you turn the key on watch the security light. if it stays on for a few seconds and then goes off you o not have a VATS issue.

are you sure that when you replaced the starter that you made good contact with the wires? Did you replace the entire starter?

Your probably going to need to get under there with a meter. Test the body of the starter for full ground. Test the large hot wire for full batery voltage and test the selinoid wire for full batery volatge while cranking. see if you are lacking something. If you have all of that and still the problem then you either have a coroted cable or another faulty starter.

you might want to make sure that you didn;t pinch any wires when you replaced the starter

Thanks for the tips. Guess its time i figure out how to use my voltmeter. I brushed off the contacts when i put the new starter in. I sawzalled off part of the y pipe so there's plenty of room to mess with it.
