  • 2001 maintenance

I just recently (3weeks or so) bought an 01 camaro and have loved it so far. The only thing is i wished this thing had some documentation as to what has been done on it. The only thing I could get from the previous owner was new brakes and GT II's.

Anyways I was able to get 4-5 hours on my friends lift at a nearby shop. I was going to replace the transmission fluid and differential fluid. I already put a new belt on and gave it a an oil change.

Since I have limited time I was hoping you guys could give me suggestions as to other things I should look for. The car has approx. 78k miles.

Maybe some suggestions as to what usually needs replacing on a camaro with this many miles.

I appreciate any feedback or comments.

    Edit:

I did look through this thread:
    http://www.camarov6.com/ubb/ultimate...=016024#000019
and got some great ideas, maybe some suggestions based on my mileage?

Besides the oil, trans and diff fluids, check the coolant under the radiator cap to see if it's the red antifreeze (dex-crap). If so, you may find bits-n-parts of gooey clumps floating around in there. You may want to change to the green coolant. Other than that, it's seems like you've got evrything covered.

Oh, you may want to seafoam it. ~*~Please don't ask anything about it because a mod will lock this topic. Just do a quick search here in this section or in the Intake section and you will find all that is needed to find.

Do the basics, change oil, tranny fluid and filter, diff oil, FUEL FILTER, spark plugs, wires, coil packs, change antifreeze to green antifreeze like hockyman said. If you want to go a bit more, take off and clean your throttle body, and remove and clean fuel injectors.

Its just me, but i dont think seafoam cleans the intake. I used 2 cans, and about 2 weeks later i removed my upper and lower intake manifolds and both were very diry. Also, i have used every gas treatment, and injector cleaner, again, i removed my fuel injectors and they were totally clogged. I have pics on my page and much better ones that i could send you if you wanted. Again, its just my 2 cents, other people seem to like them, but i have tryed this stuff and have not been impressed. I will never again buy these types of products, but thats just me.

pcv valve, check all hoses, check shocks, power steering fluid, check brake fluid, check wiper blades if you live in a rainy area, etc etc...

I really hope victimization made a typo. I dont know your reasoning for not changing the tranny fluid?

because it is SO good for it.

                get a clue.

I've NEVER heard of a tranny shop that wouldn't take my money and do a fluid flush.

Chemical solvents + flush + high mileage = maybe not such a good idea

Fluid flush + high mileage = probably fine. Some people [usually not mechanics] don't recommend it.

Pan drop + filter change + high mileage = always a safe way to go, no matter who you ask. Gets rid of 1/3 to 1/2 the fluid and you can see what's lurking at the bottom of your pan.

The stories about "my tranny died after a fluid change" are total bs... most people are doing that fluid change as a last ditch effort to see if their tranny problem will just go away with the old fluid.

                    great explanation there

oh, so you are trying to say that if you do a flush it will remove all the dirt and debris from all the small areas? That might make the tranny to start slipping?

oh really? It happened to 2 of my dads friends.

and all of the tranny shops around will NOT do it, because they dont want to be held responsible when your transmission breaks.

you need glasses, i NEVER told someone not to change their engine oil......

and ok, im giving them wrong information, even though that is what the tranny place said. do whatever you want.. i dont care about your car, nor anyone elses.

my father had a friend who changed his tranny fluid, and his tranny busted, tranny shops around here will not change your fluid unless it was done regularly, my friend has a car on the origional tranny fluid with 220,000k miles on it.

i would rather keep my old fluid then have my tranny break on me, thankyou.

Yes you did, you said something like fresh oil will clean a high milage engine that has not had regular oil changes and leave pits where the dirt used to be, and your engine will fall apart. im 100% positve, because i remember every one tell you, you were crazy.
