  • Thinking about an F-Body

And since I'm 17, I think I'm going to go for a V6. Too much for insurance on a V8, and all.

So, I was wondering. What's the good and what's the bad?

Also, what modifications would you recommend for one? I looked at the modification page, and it said intake/exhaust is usually first, so I'd probably start there, to get a little boost in performance, as well as a nice aggressive sound. But would there be other options more suited?

    Thanks for listening.

This is just how I would do it if I were starting over:

    Intake/Exhaust
Limited Slip Differential (if not already)
    Headers and High Flow Cat
    HP Tuners (tuning software)
    Suspension Upgrades

Then if you want more (we always want more)

Power Adder (Turbo, Supercharger, or Nitrous)
    CAM shaft
    Heads
    Stroker motor
    Rocket assist

Along with all of these, there will be countless small things you will add along the way (Gauges, shifters, shift lights, window switches, intercoolers, bottle heaters, hoods, Tires, Wheels, etc.) The list is never ending.

    Good Luck.

        Thanks guys.

I haven't gotten one yet, but I figure if I save up for a little while, I can get one. They seem to go pretty cheap. I was thinking a '96 or a '97 Firebird. They look pretty awesome.

Insurance wasnt really that much more for me on a Z28...

Have you looked at price quotes yet?

As long as you maintain the car well, you shouldn't run into any major problems. With f-bodies it's always the occasional electrical issue, o2 sensors, rattles & squeaks, etc. Oh, and warped rotors...

Just dont make the same mistake I did, DON'T GET AN AUTO. Although I did very well with mine, 16.4 @ 82 to a 14.55 @ 92. I got rid of mine because of insurance and because my auto with a 3500 stall didn't like my mickey thompson et streets very well, I blew it up. They can be fun, and I miss mine but atleast I have a five speed now!

I haven't checked a quote for a Z28, but for a 2000 Mustang GT is $2100/yr. And that'll be too much for me, going into college and all.

I was thinking about getting an auto before I read that, FireFighter...

i've been spraying for years and i also drag race my car..its an auto...90K miles and still the original tranny...had the TCC valve serviced a couple years ago...$250 - $300 it cost...something like that...other than that never had a problem...and yeah as long as your record is decent a V8 shouldnt be too much more...insurance companies would just laugh at me ..i pay $2600/year :D

Dont get a 94-95 with a 3.4 engine. They're sturdy but dont put out any power.

get a 96 or newer. 97 and newer have a more solid interior and the little things dont go out as quick(as far as I know) decide now whether you want t-tops, auto, and other options. get pewter/gold if you want a car that doesnt show scratches or dirt very well. DONT GET BLACK unless you are going to wax it every week. they look trashy too when they are dirty. also, the visibility on the 93-97 isnt so well unless you get aftermarket headlights. If i were you I would go with a 98 or newer with less than 80,000 miles. GO Y87 too. then you got the gears and suspension already and then some(y87 is pretty much a z28 with a v6 fo an engine) , ram air box is easy to modify too on 98+. If i had a choice now I would trade for a 98+. good luck and watch for the little things. also, go with a somewhat darker interior, the carpet looks better after alot of miles.

When I was looking for what style F-Body I wanted, I started from the outside in. I liked the style of teh camaro better, then decided I liked the 93-97 body style best. Then I looked at the interior, saw that I liked the 93-96 better. Then I looked at the engine, and saw that I would rather have the 3.8. That narrowed down my choice to only the 1996. I also wanted a manual, so that made thing even harder for me. I was also searching for a T-Top. I searched for about 2 months until I gave up on the T-Tops because I didnt like teh colors I was finding (blue, green, white). So I dumped the T-Top Idea, and went with the Silver Hardtop I have now. Drove out an hour and a half to the dealership, and havn't looked back since.

Well, I like the 93-97 style Firebird most (unless it's a Trans Am, then it's '98+, but I don't think I'll find a T/A of those years in my range...)

The newer Firebirds look a little funky, IMO.

So, I was thinking 1996-1997. I think I found one with the Y87 package, cause it has the dual outlet exhaust, and the fancy wheels, but no mention is made to it, and it loooooooks like drums in the rear. But, I can't tell, the pics aren't too clear. I'd go check, but it's in Tampa, and like $7,800.
