You can check the door codes here.
http://tech.firebirdv6.com/generalspecs.html
The production codes can be found on the inside drives side door or in the glove box.
Print out these codes to have them on hand when you are checking out vehicles.
Yes, the older cars have drums in rear. I think they are all 4 disc after '98?
I think there is a nice fbody for sale right now on this forum with 28,000 miles for about 10,000 grand. no, not mine, but might be good to compare.

hey, im 16 and have a 1997 Pontiac Firebird, in Massachusetts insurance kills! $3350 a year! I love my car, its black, and doesnt look too bad when dirty. I would definitely go for a manual if i could do it again. Auto is alright, but just not as fun. Also, check www.progressive.com and see how much more a V8 would be, i dont think it was that much. I went with the six for insurance reasons too. I paid $4500 for mine with 88,000 miles on it, so i think u could do better than $6000, but good luck!1997 Pontiac Firebird V6<br />SLP CAI, T-tops, 90K, BLACK!!!

Progressive ****ing sucks for a new driver! Go with State Farm. Getting liability insurance also lowers the payments substantially. I think it's also true that with liability insurance, it doesn't matter what kind of car you have, because it is the same for all cars since if the accident is your fault they don't pay for your car, just the one you hit.<a href=\"http://cardomain.com/id/stupidfock\" target=\"_blank\"> 1996 <b>5spd</b> Silver Camaro</a><br />- Removed airbox, replaced with performance filter.

Hehehe, my insurance is under $800/yr with State Farm, full coverage, for my 02 Bird. A TA would have only been a little few dollars more. But then I'm 35. And married. And I own my own home. All that stuff lowers your premiums because they show that you are responsible. For younger drivers the majority of the premium is for liability because the younger you are, the more likely you are to have an accident. Throw in the fact you have ANY type of sporty car, and that makes the liability that much worse. You could have a beater Firebird and you'd still have high premiums. It's just part of being young and driving a sports car. You have to pay to play.
I wish I could have afforded a Firebird when I was younger, but yes, the insurance and the price of the car itself was just prohibitive. I had wanted one since I was a kid, and it took until a few years ago to get one.2002 Silver Firebird A4<br />T-Tops, Leather, Y87, W68, Chrome Wheels<br />Bone Stock

Remember, if you're a young, single guy, they'll KILL you on insurance. When I got married my rates went down some. Then when I got a house they went down again. Then when I turned 25 (I think it was) they went down yet again. My Firebird is about $750 or so per year, my wife's 04 minivan is about the same for full coverage, and I have an old junky Cutlass that's $300/yr liability only. So I insure 3 cars for $1800/yr. Getting old has it's advantages.
Just comparing the rate between the Firebird and the Cutlass... Assuming the Firebird is worth $15,000 and the Cutlass is worth about $500, it costs less than $500/yr to insure the Firebird that is worth 30 times the value of the Cutlass.
The way people sue these days, liability is a major part of your insurance. For my Firebird and van, the liability and the comprehensive are about the same amount. The comprehensive part might actually be a little higher.2002 Silver Firebird A4<br />T-Tops, Leather, Y87, W68, Chrome Wheels<br />Bone Stock

State farm is sooo expensive. And they raise your rates for reason's such as... "You're car is getting older, so the chance of your safety features failing goes up, so you're rates have to go up" So... Yeah... State Farm bits IMO.\'97 Camaro 3.8L

What also helps my rates is that I've never filed a claim (I have heard about them dropping people who file claims, though I've heard that about other large insurers too), and I also have all of my insurance through them, so I get a multi-line discount. But the major thing is my age, marital status, and my stability. I've had the same job for years, and my credit and driving records are impeccable. All that stuff helps. I'll bet that most of you are in your
teens and early 20's. There's nothing you can really do except keep your driving record clean and suffer until you get older. Once you turn 25 your rates start dropping. Live responsibly, it pays off as you get older, BELIEVE ME.
Also, have your car under your parent's name if you can. That will help some.2002 Silver Firebird A4<br />T-Tops, Leather, Y87, W68, Chrome Wheels<br />Bone Stock
