Everyone seems to be confusing the RS and y87 package. RS is just an appearance package in 96-97.

What about the SLP RS? Those cars are like Y87 cars with a stripe package right. They don't have ground effects or 3pc. spoiler. At least I never saw one like that. I think those were only 98+ cars.

The ground effects are removable.. maybe he didn't like them. Maybe he's just
one of those "Type R" kinda guys and just decided the RS badge looks cool and he stuck a couple on there.

ya, like I said, look up the VIN # and see if it's #'s matching... It's the #1 way to tell
You don't even need to worry about checking the vin or going on carfax, just find out what the RPO code for an RS from his year is, and then look inside the glove box. Then you can do this: or maybe this:
I've got a 96 RS and it came with the ground effect package, 3.08 gears, 3 RS badges (both sides and rear). I didn't have any badges on the glovebox though.

From what I can tell, you can't tell if it's an RS by the VIN number, because my VIN says I have an RS to. Just check the RPO code. But if it doesn't have ground FX, spoiler lip thing and RS badging, its probably not an RS.

The Y87 performance pkg was optional w/auto trans only, not available w/manual trans.
The ground effects and spoiler were in the Y3F sport appearance pkg.
I've noticed dealers that try to sell any v6 with gfx as an RS so they get more money :(
