I'm assuming you have a pill in your key, try rubbing the contacts with an eraser from a pencil, the resistance value could be in the iffy point and the VATS allows it to start. If you have a spare key try that and see if it does the same thing. If the light shuts off you may want to get another key made so you are sure to always have a spare. If not it could be the ignition cylinder. Not sure if a security light will have a code or not, someone else can answer that I'm sure.

If you don't have VATS, ignore what I have said.

Not sure about the code either. If it is the cylinder it wont have problems starting right away, but sooner or later it will start to give you trouble.

i found out the most brilliant thing recently when my car refused to do anything when i put in the key and the security light flashed. i had recently researched it and found out it was the two wires in my ignition were probably frayed and the dealer would want to rip me off and put in a new ignition cylinder. i though i would take care of it myself so i started pulling apart my steering wheel. i didn't have a wheel puller so i gave up. i discovered that our cars have the pass II system that reads the resistance in the chips in our key, while this makes the car almost impossible to steal, it also makes an older car hard to start. with all the friction going on in the steering wheel with the key being turned, the wheel turning and tilting, the wires sometime get frayed, so naturally i decided to pull my dash apart and see what i couls do. there are two little white wires coming down fromt the steering wheel, bundles with the airbag wires. once those are located all you have to do is unplug it. this causes the computer to read infinite resistance so it just make the security light stay on forever but your car will start just like it used to. now all i have to do is figure out how to disable that stupid bulb ps i did this on my car and i know it works

well for those whose light is on and have a remote start alarm that is the reason the security light is on.
the chip is bypassed and the light will stay on.
as mine does.

disable the bulb huh.. you may be able to jsut cut it out.. or! cut a tiny little bit of electrical tape.. or just pull it though the dash and hide it..

well for those with light flashing just do the ignition cylinder replace, thats the only way to fix it, or just tape the two burnt wires back together.
for those with the light on and the car starts, I dunno what to tell u , I fixed my car last year with the light flashing problem and after about 6 months the light came on again, first the car wouldnt turn on, but now it does all the time and the light stays on. I guess just wait till it finally breaks ot replace it again, I will just keep starting it, I think the chips are too sensitive or something that the SECURITY system can't detect it correctly.
My light has been on for the past 3,000 miles and its fine, I would just wait till it starts flashing.

If your security light is on then the PASS II system is disabled. Check your manual. Mine's been on solid for the past two years. Since it first stayed on solid I haven't had a problem starting the car.
