I have a 96 a4 3.8. I am going to upgrade my 3.08 to 3.42 and lsd. I know i will have to get a 97 pcm for my car. My question is will i have to get the vin number out of a different car for it to work or something? Just wanting to get everything together before i do all this.

Yes you will need the vin for a 97 automatic.
UNLESS you find a 97 A4 PCM that is already a Y87 PCM then it will be direct swap and you won't need programming at all. -
Why would i need to flash a 97 a4 pcm with a 97 a4 vin? Wouldnt it already have a vin for it. They'll just need to know what gears that VIN# came with stock. Ok i sm going to call this junkyard tomorrow that is nothing but f-bodies. Just to make sure i have this right... i need to ask for a 93-97 z28 rear end with 3.42 gears and a 97 pcm? It'll make it possible to just tune and bolt-in the PCM if it had the same tranny that you do. If it doesn't, then TSP can have it re-flashed with some VIN# and then tune it [img]smile.gif[/img]<a href=\"http://www.fullthrottlev6.com\" target=\"_blank\">www.fullthrottlev6.com</a> THE SOURCE!Comment

I had to reflash my PCM to a Y87 vin number when I got a new rear end in mine.Comment
