  • Blue smoke, whats wrong?

    I have a 94 3.4 A4. I noticed the other day, that when I turn it on, a cloud of blue smoke came out, then would stop. I would go in reverse up my driveway and I could see it coming out. Couldn't tell when I was driving if it was coming out or not. I had someone rev it up a good couple times and some came out around 3,000 rpm. But then today it didn't smoke at all. Do any of you know what that could have been from?

    Blue smoke? Sounds like you're burning oil. Maybe your piston rings are worn down?

      Well I only have 47,000 miles on it. Would they be worn that quickly?

        It's oil, but probably not the rings. I vote for valve guides. First check the oil level, make sure it's not overfull. If all is well, go to the auto parts store and buy a bottle of Bardahl's No-Smoke. It basically just thickens up the oil viscosity, but it works really well. Either that or replace your valve guides. :rolleyes:

          Well I did check the oil to see if water was in it, but there wasn't. It was a little over full. Maybe that was it. But I had it changed this morning so maybe it will be ok now. It didn't do it since so maybe everything is ok.

            You may want to go to a heavier weight oil...

              i think its 10w30 pennzoil

                  Is the 10w30 pennzoil ok for it?

                    is the 10w30 pennzoil ok for it? Anything else that could have caused the blue smoke?

                      valve seals, leaks in block, heads, or mating surfaces.
                      ASE Master, L1, X1, C1. Instructor in automotive systems. 99 3800 4L60E with a few mods and a greatful dead sticker on the back window.

                        I would definatly vote for the valve seals. Your car is getting older, and has very few miles for how old it is and there may have been periods that the seals didn't have oil on them and may have weathered some. I have also heard of some oils a while back causing the seals to deteriorate. Try high milage oil. I have heard good comments on it so far, I am going to switch to it with my next oil change.

                          There are various sealant products out there, but call me old fashion, when my 460 v-8 and 350 v-8 had a little blue smoke as they grew in age, I went from a 10w-40 to a 20w-50, and STP oil treatment which solved the problem.

                          For a v6, maybe a 10w-40 with STP oil treatment will help.

                          Anyways, that I what I used back in the day...

                            I did the same with my old 350, and I guess for my 250,000 mile escort. I just jumped weight. 10w-40 and 20w-50 in that escort. Cold starts can be a ***** but that awful knocking sound it gets when I beat on it goes away.
