  • Need help with fan switch mod (LS1info guide)

I am trying to hook up the fan switch in this guide:

    http://www.ls1info.com/article.php?s...thread&order=0

Since my car is a 97 V6, things aren't exactly the same as the car in the guide. I'm not sure which wires to connect to. I found a light blue wire and a double red wire that go to Cooling Fan #1. Are these the right wires to connect to? If anyone has installed the Hayden fan switch please help me out. Thanks.

The only fan switch I know about and use is the manual kind. There are tons of information on it too.

I know about the manual switch, but I decided not to do that one because I don't really like the idea of running wires, drilling holes in the console, and having to remember to turn the fans off when I turn off the car. I like this setup much better. The car in the guide is an LS1 but it should be possible to hook this up on a V6 also. Somebody has to have done this before, right?

There should be a dark blue and dark green wire, these are the cooling fans I'm pretty sure(high and low speed, no idea which is which) Somewhere in the tech database is a wire layout that tells I think.

Are you talking about the green and blue wires that are marked H and J on the passenger's side of the car? The manual fan switch guide says to use those wires, but this guide is saying the wires are in the fuse box on the driver's side of the car.

I would use H and J, they have less current going through them.

I did this a week ago. I didn't really follow the exact directions or anything. I pulled the fuse box up, and just started hackin.

I used the the red and light blue wires you are talking about. One of the red wires is hot, just cut both of them, then touch one against some metal, if it sparks, thats the one you want. If it doesn't spark, then you want the other one (although, now that I think about it, it probably dosen't matter since they come together at the relay anyways). Then I spliced a wire into the light blue wire, and ran thoes to the switch.

Overall, I like the whole thing, except there is one problem. When you park the car, heat builds up under the shroud. So the fan starts running even when the car is off. I plan to find some type switch to splice into the red wire that will shut off if the voltage drops too far, so that at least I can start the car. I have it set at about 185* right now, and it runs quite abit when I park, but haven't had any problems starting the car this week.

Here are a few pictures I took.

Here is my understanding of how the fan system works. 12V+ is supplied to the relay's power circuit input(red wire) and control circuit input(smaller gauge wire in same relay) when the ignition is on. The relay's power output goes to the fan(blue wire). The control circuit ground wire goes into the PCM. To turn the fan on, the PCM grounds the control circuit ground wire, which closes the relay and completes the power circuit, and the fan turns on.

The wires on the passanger side run to the fuse box and to the relay. Those wires are the control circuit ground wires of the relay. The wires in the temp switch guide are the power wires for the fan. It bypasses the relay completely. Depending on how you wish to install the system, either should work, but it will take a little different wiring to use the control wires. Also, I don't know if the relay power wires remain hot when the ign. is off, but if they do your switch would operate even when the car is off. If the wire does turn off, you could find your own constant 12V+ source and substitute it for the red wire. Then the fan would continue to operate until the car cools down regardless of whether it is running or not. Just make sure to fuse that new lead properly.
